One simply can't compare the Active and regular S4 at half brightness. The Active is about twice as bright. Turning it to 25% brightness would make for a more accurate tests. I checked it out in the store today. Equally, at 100% brightness the regular S4 is as bright as the Active is at 50%. There is no doubt in my mind that Samsung opted against AMOLED because it is useless in daylight -- here in CA even the Active is borderline bright enough on a sunny day.

With all that said, turning the Active to 40% brightness and regular to 100%, the two are comparable in brightness and the AMOLED screen looks far crisper.
