Google keyboard using symbols when I type words.

If I type (for example) "right" it uses an arrow pointing up and I have to delete and retype/swype the word. Very annoying so how can I change it? It only started like this in the past few weeks.

Mine shows the symbols as a suggestion but it doesn't auto correct to use them. Try checking your auto correct setting.
settings > My device tab > Language & input > Google keyboard settings (gear icon) > Text correction > Auto-correction. I have mine set to 'Aggressive' but I'm thinking maybe yours is set to 'Very aggressive'? Another suggestion is to check the Add-on dictionaries that you have installed.
