This issue will only affect those coming to ATT or for those that did not have an LTE phone on ATT that uses a micro SIM. For those that are already on ATT LTE network, just pop your micro SIM in and you are good (Also since the iphone 5 uses a nano SIM, you all will need a new SIM if not using an adapter.)

I got the sg4ge and put an existing # we had on our account on it. All it does is connect at hspa+. Same as posters here.. I called ATT and they were little help. Most did not even know what the google edition was. I gave them the IMEI and they said it comes up as a 4g device not lte.. Fine, I have a spare ATT note 2, so I give them that IMEI. They were able to add LTE plan. Still no LTE. I call google, they were little help. I think maybe its the APN, call google and ATT... no help. But According this to thread I have the right ones. So I do the trick referenced about notification toggle.. nothing.

I am out of ideas. So right now the IMEI on the ATT side is the note 2 so I can have the lte plan. I see other posts saying the csr recoded their imei to have LTE.. from the ones I spoke to that was not possible. Call ATT about 7 times. As of right now... I am just getting an H not even an H+. Very frusterated. The number I activated this phone was not on an lte plan, but i am on an lte plan now.

@puma It seems to me that you keep your sim in the note 2 and call tech support and have them troubleshoot until it works in the note 2. Once it's working on that, then move it over to the s4ge. Sounds like an account provisioning issue.

I would except note 2 radio is not working. But I think I can try to find another phone to do the same.

Also just realized I am WAY outside the LTE coverage for ATT. I just thought it was everywhere like VZ.

I had this when I was at the AT&T store-- me and the guy behind the counter were both scratching our heads over why I only had HPSA, then he remembered that his shop wasn't in an LTE area. I thought that they had microcells in all the stores, but I guess not.

Re: AT&T LTE

It's called a beta for a reason and available only to developers for a reason. There are at least 6 or 7 more versions to go before final release. The latest beta has a lot of improvements and more can be expected.

I have been running iOS 7 beta since the day it launched.

I had to get a new sim because I went from the iPhone 5 to the S4GE

I have the same problem. I received my S4 GE last Friday. Granted I had some data package issues which I knew about. Now that I have the appropriate plan (Data Share), AT&T has my IMEI and Sim Card (relatively new, about 2 months old) is confirmed to be 4G LTE capable, I am still having issues. AT&T is insisting that the best they can do for my phone is 2G connectivity for both voice and data. I do live in the sticks but commute to a 3G and sometimes a 4G LTE grid. I was on the phone with Customer Care today in a 3G region when they told me 2G is the best I can hope for unless I call Google and return the device and get an AT&T S4 (NOT HAPPENING:mad::mad::mad:!). I have followed all the steps on this page it seems to be an issue on AT&Ts network. Has anyone had the same problem or heard of anyone having this problem on Verizon ?

This just does not make any sense to me. I took my SIM card from my old S2 to me when I went to an ATT corporate store and instead of getting a new card and going through the hoops, they cut my card down to the micro to fit in my new S4GE. Turned the phone on and had an instant LTE connection. Did a speed test and got LTE speeds. Absolutely no problems since then.

One thing I would recommend is that you go to a "corporate" store instead of the normal ATT stores. You can do a search on google for your area and find one. They should be able to fix your problems on site. There is a definite difference between the service between the stores.

Update...

ATT did whatever they needed to do on their end, but my APN settings were not set correctly. I found some info on the web where someone had to reset their phone to factory specs to get LTE working. I didn't want to do this so looked for additional APN settings and found the following threads:

Requesting AT&T APN Settings for Galaxy S4 - xda-developers
AT&T APNs for custom ROMs - Vivid - RootzWiki

I kind of mashed together a couple of different versions but based mine off of the second link's APN #3. As soon as I entered and saved, the phone instantly recognized LTE and I was getting monster speeds here in NYC.

Here is what worked for me:
1. Call AT&T tech support, tell them your LTE isn't working, and they'll most likely need to update your account to an LTE 4G data plan do some other back end stuff
2. Make sure the store gave you a sim card that works with LTE
3. Call tech support again (and again, and again) and confirm that AT&T has updated everything on their end (you may need stay on the line and work with a tech support specialist who will take care of the IMEI business)
4. Go to APN settings... menu > settings > more > Mobile networks > Access Point Names
There should only one option that's already checked off. Click on whatever the title is (you will be changing it) and it will take you to the Edit access point screen.

These are the settings that work for me:

Name: AT&T LTE
APN: pta
Proxy: Not set
Port: Not set
Username: Not set
Password: Not set
Server: Not set
MMSC: http://mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port: 80
MMC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type: None
APN type: default,agps,admin,fota,mms,supl,hipri,internet
APN protocol: IPv4/IPv6
APN roaming protocol: IPv4/IPv6
APN enable/disable: APN enabled (this should be greyed out)
Bearer: Unspecified

One last note: I downloaded Notification Toggle app from the Play Store. When installed, you can make the "4G" options menu accessible via the notification bar dropdown. When you go in, make sure your preferred network type is set to LTE/GSM auto (PRL).

And...that should be it! Hope that works for someone else out there...

Give this a try. The phone doesn't ship with LTE turned on.

A possible LTE option missing, solution :D - xda-developers

This was helpful, thanks for posting it. I had no issues with my phone *initially*, but noticed that after my first phone reboot I lost LTE. I have been on HSPA since then until I tried Notification Toggle in the link you provided, which seems to work nicely. I now have stable LTE. Only thing I found after playing around with it a little is if I switch to 2G, then my phone loses LTE and reverts to H again. I then have to go back into the 4G toggle as described in the link and re-set the preferred network type. I realize this won't be an issue for many people as few buy a phone like this and opt to turn on 2G, it's just I used to leave my phone on Edge to save battery most of the time, figuring there was no point in having 3G/LTE radios on if it was just sitting in my pocket. Small price to pay tho! :)

Ok I got mine fixed. Calling Customer Care doesnt resolve ANYTHING! The answer for me was to walk into a store, give them the IMEI and explain to them the data issues. She said "In my experience its weird but sometimes we need to reissue an SIM Card in order to make the data work properly". I then explained that she may want to use the IMEI from her Work Galaxy S4 and then swap it with mine once its registered on my account. She heard me but she didnt find out until she registered the IMEI of my phone on the new card. All the CSRs had a mid store meeting to consult about the IMEI issue. Then she went to the back. 5 minutes later she came back out, we restarted my S4 GE and Viola. She had to substitute the last 4 of another IMEI. Just be persistent and remember what everyone here has had to go through. Best of luck to all.

I received my GE S4 yesterday and was able to get it set up and using LTE. My previous phone was an unlocked international Galaxy Note N7000 (so no LTE), and I had been using the same SIM for a few years. I bought a Galaxy S4 Active in order to sell it to partially fund the purchase of the GE S4, and AT&T sent a new micro SIM along with the new phone. I had to select a new LTE-compatible data plan during the checkout process. I used the new SIM in the GE S4, and did the online activation of the new SIM in the GE S4, using the correct IMEI number of the GE S4. The activation completed, I rebooted the phone, and it showed the LTE symbol next to the signal indicator and the mobile network type in the status section showed LTE:13. I didn't need to add or edit the APN info as it was already there. I ran a speed test and got 14 down and 6 up, which were much faster than my data speeds using the unlocked Note. And I'm in a fringe reception area for LTE. I was nervous that I would have issues given that I didn't have an existing LTE data plan, but so far everything seems good.

I'm loving this phone so far. It's so fast and responsive compared to the Note, and the screen is plenty big. I don't really understand the complaints from the reviewers (about the S4 in general, not just the GE S4) about the quality of materials. The phone has a nice weight to it and feels very solid. The back is a little slippery, but it feels like a premium device.

I just got my S4 GPE yesterday and activated new service on AT&T at our local corporate store. They had no problem putting me on LTE which I verified once I got home. I came from VZW so I had no previous sim card and the only thing I did to the S4 before I went and activated it was charge it and add my google account to it. This is an INCREDIBLE phone.

Received my GE S4 today! As I expected, I popped my SIM from my S4 to the GE S4 and LTE lit up immediately. It is now charging, and I will finish setting it up once it is charged! I put a screen protector on it and inserted a 64 GB micro sd card.

It was nice to have vanilla android again with no bloat from AT&T or Samsung and only Google apps on the phone! More feedback to follow!

So let me make sure I have this correct. I had a Galaxy S3 through AT&T, if I then purchase the GES4, and just put the sim in from my S3, I won't have to worry about any of these LTE issues? Thanks in advance. Just wanted to make sure I had this right.

Yup. That about covers it. I just activated my S4 GPE on AT&T as a brand new account and it came up as LTE so I'd say they got this issue fixed.

how do you guys do speed tests on mobile?

glad to hear OP got his LTE working. FWIW, my girlfriend with the stock S4 had this issue for a little - I think a couple of phone resets kinda jump started it.

I received my S4G at 5 pm last night and I started reading this thread and feared the worst.

Fortunately I woke up to see an email and SMS msg from at&t telling me to call them about getting 4G lte for my 4g LTE device. I called 611, went to technical support and it took 5 minutes to switch to 4g LTE unlimited data from my iPhone 4s unlimited data plan. Maybe I got lucky. If you are having problems ask for Erica from the Phillipines because she killed it.
Getting ATT visual voice mail has been a bit tougher and I'm still working that out.

Here is the email:

Dear Valued Customer,

We hope you are enjoying your LTE device!

We value your business and want to ensure you're set up with the right data plan for your LTE device. If you have recently swapped a SIM card from your 3G or HSPA+ device into your LTE device, your data service may not work properly. Please call us at 1-800-331-0500 (or 611 from your wireless phone) and our team can help you establish service with an AT&T LTE Data Plan.

Our team is ready to help you activate data service with the right plan. We look forward to your call.

Thank you for being an AT&T customer.

Sincerely,

AT&T

And the SMS said: "AT&T Free Msg: Did you know an eligible data plan is required for your LTE device? Please call 611 to select a plan and establish your LTE data connection today."
