Today my phone prompted me to install the 4.3 security update. So I finally did the full unroot. And then installed the update. Worked fine. I still have SD write access btw (didn't need to re-root and update the code again)!
Cool! I wonder if it will stay after the update to Kit Kat? I have not done the root and fix yet. Just moving my pics with ES file explorer!

So guys does this mean that the security update fixed the write issue?

No. It's seems likely that this issue was created on purpose. It is not a bug. Therefore, it will likely never be "fixed"

Hello, new at posting and first time rooting. I just rooted and applied the fix.Pretty easy after i figured out how to set permissions using root access. I haven't unrooted yet but probably will soon. I am glad i fixed that.

Nice. Once rooted how to change the script to allow root access?

Got it to work. Not the simplest thing in the world to root. Actually it's not that hard. It's just that instructions are all over the place. Anyways I now have write access also while you're at it there's also a neat trick to save all your Google play music on sd card instead of internal memory.
I unrooted and the SD card write access is still intact.

Nice. Sorry, just got back to reading this. I think i am going to unroot it although one of my apps has some nice features if the phone is rooted.

Just wanted to chime in, called Samsung back when 4.3 came out and a manager on duty said it was part of a feature of 4.3. Meaning at least on manager there claims its intentional.

weird little update for me - i NEVER took the 4.3 update because of this, and it always kept buzzing in my notification feed that there's an update available. this morning... gone. kind of weird for the notification tab to be empty. even weirder, it says my phone is up to date..

Kyoo: I had never applied the 4.3 update for the same reason, and about a week ago the update disappeared from my notification as well and mine would also say up-to-date. Then today (28th Oct) the update notification came back. Did yours? Can anyone who applied 4.3 recently but didn't go through the .XML file edit described here say if the SD card writing issue still exists?

I was having all sorts of troubles figuring out how to allow apps write to the sd card and found various posts that I compiled to give your apps write access after the 4.3 update.

To fix SD card access on google edition s4

    4.3 android

    install google usb driver
    https://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html

root device taken from post below
    [GT-I9505] CF-Auto-Root - xda-developers

    Download and unzip CF-Root Download
    - If you end up with a*recovery.img*and*cache.img*file, you've extracted*twice. You need to end up with a*.tar.md5*file - don't extract that one
    - (USB) Disconnect your phone from your computer
    - Start*Odin3-vX.X.exe
    - Click the PDA button, and select*CF-Auto-Root-....tar.md5
    - Put your phone in*download*mode (turn off phone, then hold*VolDown+Home+Power*to boot - if it asks you to press a button to continue, press the listed button, or run*adb reboot download*command)
    - (USB) Connect the phone to your computer
    - Make sure*Repartition*is*NOT*checked
    - Click the*Start*button
    - Wait for Android to boot
    - Done (if it took you more than 30 seconds, you need practise!)

Once you have things rooted you can go into the superuser app and from within it there is a remove option, use that and reinstall from the play store and also pay for the pro version to support being able to do this.

    * optional after you are all rooted and updated you can install things like goomanager and from goomanager you can install openrecovery script from the menu options, this will install a new recovery manager so future use

install root explorer app or some other file manager that can use root then

    1. navigate to /system/etc/permissions and make sure you have mounted the file system r/w.
    2. Edit platform.xml and find the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission.
    3. Add an additional group definition for this permission...<group gid="media_rw" />
    4. Save the changes to the file.
    5. Restart your device

at this point you should be able to write to the sd card from applications once again.
can someone give me the five year old child's version's of this? i.e., install what wear? computer or phone? what's where? step by step with pictures are a plus...

FYI for all, I've been able to apply the fix to 4.4; it just acts differently now. It now sends the pics directly to the SD card, you do not get a choice within the camera. I already had a camera folder on my SD card so I can't say if that is a requirement or not.

Not for me. I have 4.4 with modified platform.xml. Camera pics go to the usual place (not SD card)

I read your post wrong then. You want the photos to go to the usual place instead of your SD card?

If editing the platform.xml does not work for you and you do want your pics to go to the SD card, Xposed is your only other option. Xposed is not a rom it's just a tool to edit/hack certain functions within your otherwise stock S4. It's easy to add and it's easy to uninstall but it is powerful so if not comfortable tinkering I would only advise the Pictures2SD module.

I may have misunderstood yours as well.

Yes, I want write access to the SD card, but not for photo storage, I use it for other reasons. All I did was modify platform.xml and I got exactly what I wanted.

Just upgraded to 4.4.2 via Odin; it stripped the platform.xml changes and I had to reinstall xposed itself, the modules carried over.
Once I reinstalled xposed and made the change to platform.xml the pictures were back to my external SD card.

On XDA there is an installer available as well but that requires installing a custom recovery like twrp.

platform.xml edit does not work, the device still can not save the images to extsdcard, can not delete and create files, can not copy paste. I have yet microSD format to FAT32. No problem in AndroidManifest.xml and edit permissions protect. but I do not have the expertise to edit
