(Rogers) Still on 4.2.2 in no rush to update...but

Ok, so I'm on Rogers (Canadian carrier) with my S4. I decided not to update to 4.3 last month (I think this was a good decision) and I'm a noob to Android.
My situation is that I want to be able to root and flash custom roms in the future when I'm comfortable doing so. So I have a few questions...
1- was I correct in thinking there was a reason to not update to 4.3 and why? I read somewhere (probably here) that updating to 4.3 locked down the bootloader.
2- Is there still any benefit in not updating to 4.3?
3-If I do update,does it automatically install Knox? (dont really want that) and finally
4- any links to rooting and flashing for Noobs such as myself?

I'm a noob my self. I just rooted my verizon s4 (mdk/4.2.2) using this link:How to Root Verizon Galaxy S4 SCH-i545! [UPDATED with VIDEO] | GalaxyS4Root.com. With the s4, your rooting method is dependent on the build. Yes, there is good reason to not allow the 4.3 update.
at this point it may not be rootable.

Can you tell me more about this or is the answer all around me and I'm just not seeing it lol

Look for posts and articles with searches like "4.3 broke" and "4.3 review", perhaps adding your phone model in the mix. Use forum searchees, Google it and Yahoo! for it. (Been finding Yahoo more relevant than Google lately for certain things....)
