I get a notification that I have new Gmail, but when I go into the Gmail app, the email doesn't show up until I click "sync" in the app. Why would I get the notification when the app has yet to display a new message? So every time I have to click sync to received and display the new message. What am I missing with this?

Did you check your settings to see if you have it to sync automatically because you are getting that you have email on the server but it is not being pushed to the app. Also do you have push or fetch setup for it to retrieve your mail when it checks for it, That should bring it into your app.

I revised this a bit and read and check this out:

I'm having an issue where the Gmail widget says "View More Conversations", but when I tap on it, no new emails show up in my inbox, even after refreshing it. All conversations have been marked as read in the inbox, priority inbox, and all mail. It also doesn't matter which device I'm using.

go into settings of the gmail account (you can do that through the widget) and change the "Days to Sync" option. You probably sync only the last 30 days and I assume all your emails are older than 30 days. Just increase it to a value that will allow you to sync old emails and then go back to the widget(or app) and refresh. That should fix the issue.
