It doesn't need batteries because it's rechargeable, so I'm not sure if that fits what you're looking for (or whether you're looking for wired or wireless), but this Bluetooth unit from Logitech is terrific and I recommend it highly:

I've heard these and they sound amazing. Little pricey though...I plan on picking this up when i get some x-tra cash.

They are definitely quite loud and clear. I usually back off the maximum volume setting a tad because there can be a little distortion there depending on the level of the mp3 file. The sound you get is comparable to a boombox of that size (a small loaf of bread, but not as deep).

I have had good luck with Logitech. I would steer clear of anything wireless though.

That doesn't sound terrible. The Jambox is also nice.

I'm not sure what your definition of loud is, but for $25 these rock surprisingly hard (quite a bit louder than I would ever want to take it) and the battery seems to last forever before needing a charge. And they're fun!
