What I'd the icon with the plus sign in the top left?

Do you have a lot of notifications active at the moment? Usually if there are to many to show at the top left it will show a + symbol letting you know there are more if you open the notification bar.

Without seeing a screen shot of it, I can only assume that you are seeing the indicator that you have more notification icons that can be seen on the room that is in the notification bar. once you dismiss or read some of them, the + will go away.
