Kies was giving my (homebuilt) Windows 7 x64 desktop big problems. It seemed to be preventing the usb driver from allowing Windows Explorer to look at the phone and SD card. I had to keep re-installing the USB driver to get it to work properly. After uninstalling Kies I can transfer files with the phone hooked up via USB using Windows Explorer. Whew. Kies is a waste; Samsung's attempt to limit us to something like iTunes. No thanks.

I did the latest Verizon GS4 update over the air taking about 15 minutes after several unsuccessful attempts with Kies freezing at 33% and then 66% of the install.

If your phones rooted, Kies will not detect it... U gonna have to manually download the firmware and flash it thru odin...

Kies is janky garbage, just like Odin. Its basically the official version of Odin minus full power usage. If your going to flash anything use heimdall, its far better and is built from source, best of all it isn't leaked software.

However if you're rooted, flashing a stock update will make you lose root. And it may even fail to flash, as your system will be detected as modified. Kies still uses your recovery to flash it, and the recovery checks for a completely stock system, if it finds anything out of place it will fail.

Either use heimdall or Odin, or place the update on the root of your sdcard and flash it from recovery.
