Is there a way to determine the current volume setting without pressing the volume control?

If you press the volume control, then you may change the current setting (shades of Heisenberg's Uncertainty Principle).
I went into the "Sound" setting, but that gave me sliders for various aspects; I suspect that the volume switch is the master control.

There are a number of different sound settings... Ringtone, Alarm, Media, Alerts, System and also Voice call. I found a widget that is really nice to have on one of my not-main-screens called AudioManager... the free version works great.
