Hoping someone can help me out here.

Yesterday my Messaging app stopped working properly. I still receive messages, but:
    1) A notification does not appear in the status bar and no sound is made
    2) On the messaging app itself, a number used to appear when a new message was received...it no longer does
    3) Within the app itself, unread messages used to be bolded. Now they are not

Here is what I have tried:
    1) Removing the battery
    2) Soft reset
3)Making sure all setting are correct. The settings in the Messaging app itself were unchanged. The Notifications box is checked, along with preview messages. A sound is set
    4) Volume settings are correct
    5) No new apps were downloaded prior to this problem occurring
    6) Application manager settings has Notifications checked. I have also cleared cache, data and force stopped
    7) Wipe cached the device also

The samsung tech support guy seemed to want to do a hard restart, but it seems ridiculous to need to do that. Any suggestions? If not, what's the best way to pack up everything so I don't lose it on a hard reset (my calendar and contacts are synced to google)
