galaxy s4 contacts dissappear

Galaxy s4 on giffgaff.
3.5k+ contacts.
Tried synch with Samsung and/or Google which works fine.
Recently started losing all contacts.
Unsynched then synch and they reappear. Whats changed?
How to fix them solid?

My guess is that somehow the data for Contacts is getting wiped clean. Are you using some kind of memory optimization app? I know that apps like Clean Master have an auto mode that can get, sometimes, too agressive...

Also, did you move your contact information to the SD Card? Not sure if this is possible or not, just a possibility. If you ARE storing these in the SD Card and the thing unmounts/remounts itself, it may cause the system not to see the data anymore. When they disappear, if you reboot your phone, do they show again or are they still gone?

My last option (but the one I think most unlikely) is that sync is going awry. It tries to sync to your account and somehow thinks your contact list is empty, so it does its thing and wipes out your list.
