It doesn't matter of I am using the stock email icon or the gmail app icon on the home screen, I get notifications for BOTH in the pull-down notifications panel and in the top notifications bar on the home screen. I only want notifications for one. I can't find how to eliminate the one I am not actively using. Can anyone suggest what I should do to solve this? Thanks very much.

If you have the two apps set up to provide notifications, they will provide notifications. The phone doesn't know which one you want notifications from unless you tell it through the notifications settings.
