Galaxy S4: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
Hey guys,
So I recently-ish got a SanDisk 32GB micro SD card for my Galaxy S4. The day I got it, I noticed a problem when I copied ~400 photos from my phone into my SD card (doing so through the gallery app, selecting then dragging the pictures). What happened after I transferred the photos is that the photos seemed to become corrupt or something. The file name, size, date taken and other details are still intact. It's just that I can't view the photo anymore at all. All I can view is a little figure of a box with a lightning bolt on it with a black background (sorry for the bad explanation - see pictures). This happened to all 400 of my photos :/
Anyways, I copied all of those photos to my computer in the hopes that someday there will be a solution so I can recover the lost files (which now include additional, recent photos and videos also becoming corrupt).
Now, what has been happening is that some new photos or videos I take become corrupt right after taking them (nearly every time for videos, a little less frequently for photos). I set my camera to save to SD card in the camera settings.
Some photos stay intact and perfect after taking them, while sometimes if I take a series of photos, they all turn out bad. Some short videos may sometimes be good, but that's not very often. I had an instance where the photos I took could be viewed perfectly for a few minutes, but then they just lost their quality (were all blurry and grainy). I noticed that this occurred after I used multi screen between Google Chrome and gallery.
Another more recent issue is that some of my apps that I transferred to the SD card have become unusable. I don't know if that's an issue with the app or what. Some apps seem like they should work, but they apparently can't. A few of the apps that went bad have lost my data with them. I got the apps back after uninstalling and reinstalling them. Now I currently have all my apps back on my phone, not the card.
When I first inserted the card for the first time, the phone read it just fine. I didn't format it the first time, but after the loss of my photos, I went into the settings and went through the formatting process, clearing all the data on the card.
Has anyone had this problem of their micro SD card corrupting their picture, video and app files to render them useless? The card is legit, I'm sure. I don't know if it's the card's or the phone's fault. My dad (has the same phone) had the same problem with his photos and card. I'm not sure about his apps or videos, or how it may be now. Also, would anyone know by any chance how I could recover my "broken" photos?
Hopefully someone can help! I can't keep living with this problem of losing my pictures and data when I need or want them! If I have to keep everything on my phone, then I don't see a reason why I would need the card in the first place (although I need the space!).
Finally, here's a couple of screen shots (on Dropbox, since I have to resort to uploading and saving all my photos I take onto there just so I don't lose them... *sigh*) of what I see when I try to view a corrupt photo.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
Funnily enough, I have the same issue - it's not every pic and it's not every time...
I've reset the phone to save DCIM photos in the phone memory - I then transfer them at the first opportunity to my laptop. Only then do I try to put them onto the SD card: if I do it on the phone using either COPY or MOVE functions, some, many, all or none get corrupted (hence the download onto laptop for safekeeping).
I'll keep an eye on this thread, coz I'm starting to get a little bit hacked-off with this phone... :-(
I have a major issue with music on the SD card as well - see separate thread.

Sorry to hear you got the same problems!
But I'll be sure to try out what you're doing! To avoid most of my files becoming corrupt, I've been using Dropbox and Google+ to upload my pictures and videos as I take them. This works most of the time; but on a couple of occasions, some photos got corrupt before the uploading finished, so some of the files turn out corrupt online. A downside to uploading is that sharing the photos is hard (using links) and that the pictures seem to lose their quality (for Dropbox at least - I haven't yet checked up on the files on Google+). So doing what you're doing is probably the better method of saving files for now.
I love the S4 in so many ways - it's a spectacular phone and all. But this SD card problem is just getting annoying, which a problem like this shouldn't be happening on such a high end, new (not necessarily new now, but still haha) phone...
Oh, and I posted a thread a while ago about this problem when I first experienced it. Someone mentioned their music files also becoming corrupt. I myself haven't had this problem since I never sent music to my SD card. [Which has me ask: do you know if other files (like pdfs, .docx, etc) also become corrupt? I never tried these file types either]
[Is there a way to link that thread to this one to see it here (and vice versa)?]
Thank you for your reply! I'm hoping we can find a solution to this issue.

I'd suspect that, if the card is at fault, any type of file could be corrupted. With regard to your other thread, open it in a separate tab or browser window, copy the URL, and post in this thread, then do the same for this thread's URL in that thread.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
This is not the first time I've heard of this issue. It seems to only be happening with the external sd card, right? If so, return it (if possible) and get another. I'll keep this thread subscribed and see if anything comes up that would be of help for you.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
Another reason why Google did away with SD cards. If you search through out the forum you'll see Samsung has a history of corrupting SD cards. Not much you can but back up photos to the cloud using Google or dropbox both are good services. Also remember not every app can b moved to SD card. Its up to developer to dust of the cobwebs as and add that feature since googled stopped it a year ago.

Thanks for the help! I'll try posting the links when possible if it would interest anyone :D
But after reading the other newer comments, it may be possible that the SD IS the problem... perhaps I can try out some pdfs and whatnot to see if they remain stable! Once I do that and see how it goes, I'll let you guys know

Thanks for the help (of subscribing and stuff haha)!
But sadly I can't really return this SD card. If I do end up not using it for my phone, then maybe I can use it for my tablet or a camera? [Which makes me wonder if this problem has been happening to other devices besides the S4 as well?] Then maybe I can get another or just not bother with a card for a little bit.
I should ask my sister if she's been having this problem also. I don't know what types of file she saves to her SD card. (I can't believe I hadn't asked her yet when she's in such easy reach! Hahaha)
Thanks again!

Yea, I've kinda noticed the SD card problems Samsung has had lately! I always like the thought of having expandable/removable storage; but if problems like this persist, then something may have to change... (although it's almost always super easy sharing files and stuff through removable storage!)
But I do recall that many apps cannot be stored on SD cards without having problems.. However, when I moved them over in the settings app, I (foolishly) just moved all the apps that were visible in the "On SD Card" tab. I thought that perhaps that tab would 'filter' out the apps that weren't capable of being moved to the card, so that all of the apps that are shown in the SD tab would be transferred just fine. Now I'm guessing that this tab doesn't do that? Haha
Thanks for the reply! :D

Maybe I'll try that out if nothing easy works! I know they're kinda expensive though, which may deter me from getting one for awhile... But if I get one and it helps, then it may be worth the expense!
If anyone is interested, here is my older thread of this SD card problem. It is still kind of "active" (if that's the right wording haha), so feel free to reply to that thread as well (although replying to this one might be more convenient :p)!

If you are having issues with your Sandisk sdcard contact Sandisk for a return and they will replace it.
Late last year some of the Sandisk cards had issues due to a manufacturing problem...I got one and it was replaced.

Great suggestion. Hopefully Sandisk can come through and help the OP out with swapping the sd card for a new one.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
I posted a thread just like this. The problem is with the SD card and the phone. I've tried 4 different SD cards different brands, different makes and different storage. I've formatted and only saved images but same corrupt files pop up when trying to show a pic to someone. Quite annoying, so I just save them to the phones storage. What I believe happens is when you put the SD to work big jobs like transferring files from phone toss card you gotta do 5 at a time, reduce the work load, also putting apps on SD cards is pointless because every time you power cycle its doing a job to bring you that app.

I'll be sure to try this out when I can! (Hopefully it can work for me, since the card is relatively new!). Oh gosh though, I think I threw away the papers and stuff (I got the card off of Amazon [and sold by Amazon])! I may look around to see if it's possible I still have the packaging or papers; although I'm not sure how likely that may be...
For returns/refunds/replacements, do you need all that stuff? Or no?
Thank you for the suggestion!

I did a real quick test a few days ago by copying some picture files onto my card using the same method as before (using the Gallery app, which the files go into the SD card's camera folder). I actually noticed what you mentioned!
When I copied one or 2 files, they tended to stay stable and able to work!
I then tried 10 files; which was when the pictures became corrupt. I didn't do a very detailed experiment, so when I get time, I'll be sure to play around more and see if there's a "sweet spot" or anything!
I also copied a single pdf onto the card last night. I haven't checked on it yet, but after I do, I'll also see if they become corrupt after a certain amount of files are copied.
Thanks for the information!

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
We've seen a lot of these types of threads with the S4 and SanDisk Ultra micro SD cards. Cards getting corrupted and failing, a lot of times after the phone has gotten very warm. I am wondering if the cards are getting overvolted or if the method in which the S4 likes to write is incompatible with that card.
Now the question I have is whether or not the issue is happening with other, non SanDisk Ultra cards.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
It's a weird issue for sure. I have a new Sandisk Ultra 64GB card and USB transferred 31GB of music to it a couple of days ago. So far, no problems. I suspect something is triggering the issues for people who have them, but the trigger is certainly not obvious.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
Just for possible clarification, my SD is a SanDisk 32 GB Class 4. :P
But it's also happening on the Ultras? I was considering getting one of those instead but decided against it due to the extra expense.
My dad has/had a SD card as well. I'm not sure how many of the same problems he had had as me - but I know he had the corrupt photos problem with his SD card. I'd have to ask him what SD card he has (although I think it may actually be one of those scam ones - where it's listed as 64 GB, but really is 4-8!).
It's worth to note that his phone got extremely hot and had terrible battery life for some reason. It suddenly got fixed (I'm not sure how since he takes pretty bad care of it and I don't see the phone myself very often...).
Anyways, I noticed that the area of the phone that got real hot was around the SD card. You guys think this might be a problem or is the heat kinda normal? I know if the phone/battery gets hot, the battery would run out quicker. So would the two problems possibly be linked? (Btw my phone doesn't get very hot unless I heavily use it for awhile).
Thanks for all the input!

Not only happening with the external card with me. I have had it happen and not tried to store or route any pictures to the external.

According to a lot of people's reports the card corruption problem seems to occur in conjunction with the phone getting unusually hot. Perhaps the heat, which may be caused by something unrelated to the card, such as battery issues, is damaging cards. Sandisk, however, claims that its cards can be safely exposed to temperatures up to 185 degrees f./85 degrees c. - http://kb.sandisk.com/app/answers/de...,-magnetic-and - so high temperature alone probably shouldn't be causing the corruption issue.

You'll forgive me for not reading the entire post, but if you haven't already fixed the issue know that it is due to the fact that you used a Sandisk SD card.... I had the same issue, called Sandisk and had them send me another card and that card took a crap too. My buddy had a Sandisk he took from his Note 1 and tried to use it in his S4 and it too crapped out. I ended up going with a Samsung SD Card and so far so good! Good Luck!

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
While not on an S4, my S3 had the same issue a couple of months ago. Was on vacation and while taking pictures, it told me my sd card had been dismounted. Tried another card and it was fine, ended up having to use a recovery program to save my pictures that were on the sd card. After recovering files, formatted card and it has worked fine since.

Huh! So maybe the heat somehow affects the writing process on the phone, and perhaps it seems that as of now, SanDisk cards are the cards that seem to be most affected by this possible phone malfunction? Very interesting...
Thanks for the info!

Have you also tried other brands of SD cards? From other posts as well as yours, it seems like the Samsung cards are the most stable (I wouldn't be too surprised haha).
I'm either going to try and find another brand or see how the cards for my family members' are holding up...

Sorry I never replied to your other post! I've heard of a lot of people getting that same dismounting problem that you mentioned. I've also read about different methods of fixing it. I think reformatting it to the phone usually is what works!
Perhaps something might change for my problem if I reformat it with the phone again? Hmm
Thanks!

I picked this card haven't gotten any problems as you explained ADATA Premier 32GB microSDHC UHS-I Class 10 Flash Memory Card w/Adapter. Definitely sound like you have a bad card. Personally I don't think SD is ask good as they use to be.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
I am throwing in my .02 on this topic.
No where am I reading where these people are buying their sd cards from. EBAY? RETAILER? AMAZON???
I got a card on ebay. 24 bucks for samsung class 10 64gb. Popped it in the phone formatted it. Works. take pix and saves to the card...
go back to look and the pix are corrupted.
Anyways
I go to Best buy..pickup a sandisk 64 gb card spent 65 bucks on it. The same card the Samsung rep has in his phone (By the way at Best buy they have Samsung kiosks for help now)
I talked to him about the issues with the card couldnt figure anything out so I bought the card. Put it in with the Rep right there. The card been working FLAWLESSLY for 2 days now.
So....My guess all these issues stem from counterfeit or bad cards sold on line.

I did get my card from Amazon, from the Amazon seller. The packaging of the card was the legitimate SanDisk package - never opened and no sign of any attempt to open it (absolutely brand new).
Not everyone also posted what class their SD cards are, since there could always be the possibility that the problem is between class 10 and lower class cards. I'm not sure if that would really affect much though...

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
OK I found out that the card also lets PDFs become corrupt. I copied one PDF (560.7kb large) onto the SD card around a week ago. I checked on that same file (going through the folders using the My Files app, then opening using Adobe reader). Adobe can no longer open it ("Error - The document cannot be opened because it is not a valid PDF document"). The file name still is the same (..... .pdf, seen from the file details).
An additional strange thing I've noticed: some photos that I have that are not "corrupt" but instead lost their quality. I had some pictures that I took for fun of this pocket knife, for example. After I took them (like a week or so ago?), I could zoom in onto the letters all the way and see them perfectly clearly. Now, it seems like I took the photos with a 3MP camera or something (just an exaggeration kinda haha).
I'm going to do another "test" by cleaning out the SD card (reformatting it on the phone [or should it be done on the computer?] - AFTER backing all the photos!) and trying to save pics again by copying and also taking pics. Afterwards, I'll again reformat the card and try the card out on this tablet.
I'm thinking that if my tablet can handle the card perfectly, then it's likely the phone's (or, at least mostly the phone's) fault. If the card still seems to not work properly (any sort of corruption, loss of photo quality, etc) then I think it may be safe to say that I should look into another SD card/refund.
Any suggestions or concerns of this "test" I'm going to do will be appreciated! :P
And thank you all for the help so far! :D

So far, to my absolute complete astonishment, the SD card is working basically flawlessly on my GS4 after backing up my files, formatting the SD card on the phone, unmounting the card, removing then reinserting the card back into the phone, then again reformatting the card.
I spammed the heck out of the card with tons of new photos taken from the camera (both photos just from the camera as well as recording a video and taking snapshots while recording). I also copied 6 pdfs onto the card as well as copying 10+ photos through the Gallery app. Everything that I have placed onto the card so far has been stable.
However, I didn't make this experiment completely controlled. I didn't (and still don't) have my Otterbox case on while taking pics and copying.
If the problem is linked with overheating, then it may possibly not have showed up during this test since the heat had been able to dissipate much faster than with the thick case on. I'm going to wait a little bit before putting my case back on then respamming the SD card with more pics and files.
Hopefully it will still keep the files and photos intact!! (Knock on wood)

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
So two days or so ago, I noticed the same, haunting logo of a corrupt photo in my gallery... Of course, I was kind of disappointed that it had reappeared once again. However, I'm thinking that perhaps it was because I overloaded the SD with all these pictures and a few videos in a very short amount of time.
It sounds weird, but I was taking a ton of pictures of this beetle I found in my house. I decided to take a lot of pictures, trying to get a real clear shot. I also at a point started recording a video while taking more pics while recording. I'm thinking that since it seems that only the photos taken in this time have become corrupt, maybe they pictures only turn bad if I overload the SD (and thus only those photos taken at that moment become corrupt)? Since my last update, I haven't noticed any corruption of photos (I haven't checked other file types) or videos until this incident.
..Oh, actually I think a few other random photos I took one time also became corrupt. I didn't take a whole photoshoot this time - I may have taken only 3 or 4 photos max. So I'm not sure what happened there.
The only other thing is that (I think around the time frame of the randomly corrupt photos I just explained) some of my photos just lost their quality completely. I think I explained this problem before. They just seem to become blurry and are not sharp at all.
(Side note: the pictures I take are usually prefectly fine right after I take them - I can view the photos right after the shot and they are perfect. I've only noticed the photos becoming corrupt at random times -like when I go back and look at the photos awhile afterwards [which can vary from minutes to hours after the shot]. What could explain this..?)

I'd suggest backing up all image files to a computer or other external storage site as soon as you record them. Then you'll have a baseline for comparison with the files on your SD Card.

I upload to Dropbox as well as Google+ automatically after taking photos and I think videos. I don't think too much quality is lost doing this, although I haven't really checked and compared haha

I'll keep an eye on this thread, coz I'm starting to get a little bit hacked-off with this phone... :-(
I have a major issue with music on the SD card as well - see separate thread.
I had the same problem but I did some more analysis:
1. I used 64G SAN DISK Class 10 and after couple of days some of the pictures were corrupted (Black images shown).
2 .I Formated the SD Memory card and save my images from my PC but after about one week it was corrupted again.
3. Very important observation is that when I insert teh SD card to my laptop all information was there and the picture can be seen smoothly. SO THE PROBLEM ISNT IN TEH CARD ITSELF.
3. I replaced the SD card to a 32G Kingston class 4 and the problem has not happened again.
4. I installed the same 64G SAN DISK Class 10 in another Samsung S4 belong to my friend and now it is 2 weeks it works fine witohut any issue.
By doing this my conclusion is that the card is not damaged as it was working fine with my PC and in my friend S4, I think SAMSUNG has a compatebility problem with some cards in Galaxy S4, I thing that Samsung must have a information about the issues mentioned in this site and other sites.
As part of the testing to approve a new phone many tests run to identify and clear this kind of issues.
I think the problem is inside the S4 itself with some kind of SD cards or some kind of high speed of memory cards.
I hope SAMSUNG is reading this observation and will contact me to help me with this issue as my phone is under warrenty period but not in my country.
Thank you

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
I had my s4 for 2 days back in July when it corrupted the SanDisk sd card I had been using in my S3 for over a year. I was told it was the sandisk sd card. I lost all my photos. So I purchased a new pny sd card through bestbuy per the samsung reps suggestion. It worked until about 4 weeks ago, when the gallery began freezing. I ended up backing my phone up & then it started working ok again. It was only freezing with the sd card. Now here it is again, freezing & not showing the photos on the sd card or corrupting them. I think it is a s4 issue with all sd cards not the sd cards themselves. I want the extra space, that's why I have a phone that allows the sd card. anyone have another suggestion?

I'm also thinking that the problem isn't strictly only from the SD cards we use. People here have been using various brands and classes of cards, most of which seem that they have had some sort of corruption issue.
Have you noticed any trends with the issues? For example, I noticed if I take a ton of videos or photos and have them saved directly to the card, those photos are likely going to be corrupted or lose their quality. However, if I only take a few pictures, the photos seem to stay fine... Before my card unexpectedly started working like normal recently (a couple weeks or so ago), only 5 or so files (pdfs, other media, etc) could be transferred to the card without being corrupted. Any more and they would likely be unusable afterwards.
I guess my only suggestion right now would be to have photos automatically upload to Dropbox, Google+ or any other place, or to save the files manually to a computer whenever your can so you won't lose them all the time.
Thanks for the reply, and good luck!

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
So after reading both your post, is it right assume that this issue is actually related to the "move" function within the S4, specifically moving folders that contain a lot of pics from the internal memory to the SD card? I just went off on the ebay seller that I bought my new sd card from and after reading this post, I'm starting to think this is related to the phone and not so much the sd card. I lost the majority of my pics and I'm completely devastated. I assume that's a lost cause and they can not be recovered either?

Sorry for your losses! :L
From my own experiences, it *does* seem that the likelihood of photos/videos becoming corrupt during/after moving/copying/saving directly to the SD card increases as the size of the load being transferred/saved increases.
-[For example, just a few minutes ago I took a short 25s, 52.1MB video which was saved directly to the SD card. It seems to be holding for now, but if something happens to it, I'll let you guys know! (Otherwise, assume it's still ok!).
I've mostly experienced corruption issues if I were to save a real big load (can't think of how many MB/GB, specifically) - like taking a multi-minute video WHILE taking snapshots. (Of course, there were/are times where corruption occurs 'randomly,' or when my files 'unexpectedly' stay perfectly fine [[like after taking a video with snapshots, the files will remain intact]].
In general though, taking a succession of videos or photos seems to be the most likely, or at least an acceptable, possibility of why our photos abs/or videos have become corrupt. So I'm kind of thinking it may not be [completely] due to the SD card (although we can't truly rule it out yet).]-
But as of now, I haven't been able to set aside the time to attempt to recover any of my [many] corrupted photos and videos yet. I might actually try to do or after this reply..? :P
But in my other thread about this SD card problem, one user commented this:
------
I registered just to post help for this as I just went through this 3 days ago. MY card gave me "card error, need to format" I have all my sons photos on it along with various important documents and family movies. I about had a heart attack when i saw that message.
Staying cool, I did a big search for corrupted SD cards and came across this freeware program:
Its called
Zero Assumption Recovery
(feel free to google search it- its quite popular with this "life challenge"
The tool is not totally free--EXCEPT the photo and video portion recovery.
I have a 32 gb card and it took about 60-70 minutes for the whole process- end result?
ALL 4513 photos and videos were able to be saved/found and moved over to my pc.
You need a card reader and some patience,
here is the link
http://www.z-a-recovery.com/digital-image-recovery.htm
MUST READ-- when you do the move/copy do not use your SD card as the backup- always move it to the computer !!!, if you try to restore it on the card- it will corrupt for good!
------
I myself am not sure how 'legit' this may be, since I haven't been able to search about it or even try the link yet.
Does anyone know if this possible method of recovering corrupted video and picture files really works? I'm tempted to try it out real soon; but that may have to wait until another time...
If anyone is planning to try it: just remember to BACK UP the files you'll want to recover, just in case! If I find it to seem legit, I'll plan to copy all of the files for recovery and test the program out. If I do manage to try it out, I'll let your guys know!
Finally, sorry for the super extremely long reply! Aahhh! :P

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
I bought a 32GB PNY Class 10 Micro SDHC Card for my SII (yes, TWO) and I have the same issue. I am, however, running with a custom ROM.
The micro SD card works flawlessly reading and writing when inserted into an HP laptop. I used the h2testw (http://androidforums.com/gome-flytou...sh-drives.html) to test the entire 32 GB of the micro SD card using a Windows 7 laptop. No errors and more than satisfactory write speed (~16 MB/s).

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
I upgraded from a S1, where I had very few picture file corruptions, to a S4. I transferred the same SD card I was using into the new phone (after backing up the contents). 2 months of happy use, then one morning I woke up to discover the phone had turned off overnight. When I turned the phone back on, the SD card was corrupted. Replaced it with a spare, and within 2 days that one was dead too.
I rang my phone carrier, who transferred me to Samsung, who assured me that they had never heard of this problem before - and no suggestions on cause ir fix. I think it could be arcing.
That was the first week of Oct. I don't have an SD card in at all at the moment. I don't want to rely on one until they sort this out.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
I'm wondering if this problem is very prevalent to most S4 users or not. I sister hasn't experienced any issues with hers yet (although she barely knows how to use it or save onto it...).
Also, I have experienced the corruption issue one again the past few days. I would take just a few photos of something and realize that some of the photos have become corrupt not too long after. I'm absolutely confused as to what specifically causes this annoying problem. :\

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
Get a Samsung sd card and most if not all your problems will go away. Had same issues with sandisk and Polaroid cards in s4. Read somewhere to get Samsung card, did and haven't had any problems from s4 or N3. Read somewhere sandisk formatted for windows only??? and that was causing problems. Also read sandisk had a bad batch of cards at some point last year. Samsung cards are a little pricey comparatively but if you want external memory to work its worth it. I know there are a lot of threads concerning Samsung phones and sd cards with a thousand suggestions. This one worked for me.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
To add more information about the problem, I've noticed that when I have my photos automatically upload to Dropbox or Google+ after taking pictures, the photos that become corrupt are also corrupt online. This is telling me that the corruption of the files is pretty fast, or that the uploading is just slow or late.
If it is the latter, then the speed of uploading after taking a photo is at fault. However, if the files are becoming corrupt before even uploading, then this may mean that the photos are possibly ruined instantaneously right after taking the photo (although, some instances contradict that claim...).
Just an FYI!

I'd suggest trying an experiment. Set your camera to save to internal phone memory with backup online. Take some test shots. Then set the camera to save to the external SD card with backup online. Take some more test shots. See which, if any, are corrupt from the internal memory and which, if any, from the SD card. That should help determine whether it's the SD card at fault.

From what I have experienced, saving photos as well as uploading them from the internal memory had no issues whatsoever. For the SD card, problems occur (either right when the pic was taken or some time afterwards).
Recalling back last week, I took many pictures of this husky puppy at school. I "accidentally" got the chance to do a test by saving many pictures to both the internal memory and SD. I took a good amount of shots by normally using the camera - these were saved to the SD. Then I decided to do a burst shot. The burst was not set to save to the SD, so they all (20 photos) were saved to my internal memory.
Looking at Google+, I see that only 4/14 shots uploaded from SD are ok (the other 10 have become corrupt). 20/20 shots uploaded from the internal memory are fine. This is also reflected in my phone's gallery app.
Looking at what has happened, it can be concluded that the problem stems from the SD card - I just don't know how fast the corruption occurs after taking photos and why exactly it happens.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
The SD Card issue seems to be a hit or miss. Recently my wife & were in NYC when suddenly she noticed all her info, ALL OF IT, was missing from the directories. I checked the card and it did not appear in the file manager. I tried her card in my phone, (both are Galaxy S4's), and the memory card was not recognized. I put in a spare for her phone to use while we were on vacation and once home I placed her SD card in the freezer, it was of course inside the plastic case for protection. I left it there for 2 days then let it warm to room temp and used my laptop to access the now visible files and move them to a folder on the computer. I did have to utilize the freezer 2 times during this process but managed to recover every file she had on the SD card. "THIS WAS BTW A SAMSUNG 16GB SD." I purchased new high speed ScanDisk SD cards and transferred all her files to the new card, other than some reorganizing all is well. We now have DropBox set up for automatic photo backup and have set up "Backup Pro" to handle all SMS, MMS, Call Logs, etc.. on a daily backup schedule.
My guess would be a glitch in the Samsung phone firmware that causes the SD card issue but it could have been the card as well. My card was the same, purchased and installed on same day, and I have no trouble although I too will be replacing the Samsung SD card. This doesn't help much with giving a fix for the problem however the intent is to give everyone a possible way to recover the files. Once removed from the freezer I did not view any files until after they were all transferred and I did nothing else on the computer until the task was complete. Warning ahead that this took quite some time to complete but having recovered all the pics and files was worth every second. Good luck to all.

Thank you for the very detailed and informative reply!
I'm wondering if the class of the card may have some effect on these issues? Perhaps the phones prefer class 10s over 4s (what I currently have)?
Where did you hear of the freezer "trick?" Was it technically to let the card cool down a great deal? Because I know when the S4 is using the card extensively, it can get pretty hot, which can possibly be a factor into these issues as well.
Odd that the SD card that decided to fail on you guys was a Samsung.. It makes me wonder if it's strictly the phone's fault or if the problems only occur with a combo of a bad SD card and a phone problem.
Let us know if you stumble upon any other issues again with your card(s)!

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
I couldn't say if the SD card being a 4 or 10 makes any difference. The new cards I just installed are 10 for the higher speed.
As for the freezer trick, it is an old computer trick I learned long ago. When a hard drive fails sometimes the data can be recovered by placing the drive in the freezer for a couple of days. My guess would be this has nothing to do with "cooling down" but rather more to do with a temporary correction on the corrupt part of a drive as result of the extreme cold. I had never tried with an SD card prior to this but I figured it was my only shot. The important thing to remember is not to panic and attempt the many things we all do when data disappears. I have noted by past experience the trick is to NOT do anything aside from moving the data to a known good drive and once there taking a look at the result. I have lost data on hard drives by attempting to look before transfer. It sounds like a joke but it does work, just have to have the patience to wait out the long transfer time, I imagine due to the corrupt source.
If this info helps even one more person save memories then my time was well spent in sharing. Good luck!
P.S. My opinion would still be that the phone itself creates this problem and not the SD card. After all, this appears to be non exclusive to any particular flash drive/SD card but very exclusive to the GS4.
-
Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
Another recovery method is if you have a way to read sd cards on your computer, a program named recuva works real well. Have used it on hard drives, flash drives, and sd cards. In the case of the sd cards, once recovered, I do a full format and everything seems to work fine afterwards.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
I managed to get half of the stuff back. My SD card was dismounted when I started USB debug mode following this How to recover deleted files from Samsung Galaxy S4 - Up-to-date Tech News and Reviews. I mounted the SD card again and half of the stuff I had lost was back. I copied right away. Unfortunately, the other half had a movie that was really dear to me. Anyway, I will buy the card reader and try with a recovery software.

Yea I can now see how the fault seems to point towards the phone instead of the SD card, since the problem has been persistent with the same phone while the SD cards may differ.
If I ever were to have the time, I would consider trying out another S card to see how it works out.. That may help with really seeing what had been causing the problems..
Thank you again for the help! :D

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
My theory is that it's actually the corruption of the card that is causing the heat, not the other way around. I had my SD card fail this weekend, and my various apps that were trying to access the card were running constantly, which ran the battery down and ran the temperature up. Once I removed the card, the battery use returned to normal and the temp cooled down to regular levels.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
The corruption bug bit me a week or so ago. I've been using a SanDisk Ultra 64GB card (genuine card I bought directly from Amazon.com). The issues started around the time that I upgraded to Android 4.3, but that might be merely coincidental. The issue manifested with my card with regard to newly-added image and music files. The 40GB or so of music I've had on the card for the past month is fine, but anything I try to add gets corrupted fast. The same thing happens with image files from the camera. Also, after I moved a bunch of apps I had on the SD card back to the phone I found a couple would not move, indicating those files had been corrupted also. I found that the phone would not format the card, nor would my wife's Android tablet. I also found what seemed odd behavior, in that if I deleted a file from the card, when I looked at the card later the file would be back. On the other hand, I've had no problem with the card spontaneously unmounting. I just got an RMA approval from SanDisk and am sending the card in for replacement. I'm hoping that the new one will work, and wish good luck to all the S4 users with SD card issues.

I have had all these problems and it seems to freak anytime I try to write a file over about 1gb in size. I have had this issue with both my Sandisk and my Samsung micro sd cards.

I've mentioned before that I have also noticed large transfers seem to be one of the main causes of the corruption. I'm not super sure why this may be, but it could be the phone not being able to write a ton of information onto the card at one time. I'm sure the card is technically able to handle a large data transfer itself...

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
I found the same thing, I bought a tablet about a week ago and bought an external 32 Gig SD Card for it and the files kept getting corrupted when I transferred to my tablet. I finally figured out transferring the files one at a time works! I have not had an issue since doing it this way.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
My 32 GB Micro SD card got corrupted yesterday.
I took some photos at work, took the card out of the phone, put it in a holder and then moved the pictures off the card to my work PC (runs WinXP).
I then deleted the photos. After I put the card back in the phone it got corrupted. My guess is deleting the photos corrupted the card.
However, I did fix it, this is what I did.
When I got home, I took out the card, put it in a holder & put it in my PC (W7).
The PC still recognzed the card. I ran scandisk & defragged the card (after copying the contents), then put it back into the phone and it's as good as new.
Hope this helps.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
Hi there!
I've just been reading through this thread. Signed up to post a reply 'cause I'm having the same issue as you guys! Now lemme start with the fact that I bought my card very cheap, I suspect it might be a fake, and will be ordering a new one tomorrow. I'll be ordering a Samsung one to put to the test several peoples advice. Anyway..
My card is: 64gb Class 10. MicroSD HC
(It might not be any of that but I don't know a way to find out!)
Okay basically, have been having this issue since day one of my SD card. I first noticed it with music. I'd transfer several gigabytes of data onto my SD card then every piece of info about the files would disappear, I'd try to play the songs and I'd get "This type of file is not supported". A little later the files would just delete and I'd be left with an empty folder on my SD card.
Let me now note that, if I transferred a few songs at a time, I had a larger success rate. When I transferred anything from an album to 10 discographies (several gb of data) It almost ALWAYS gave me that error, straight away.
I've had this issues not only with Music but with Videos (transferred onto the SD Card), apps and pictures taken also. I've had these issues whilst transferring directly to the card (whilst mounted in my phone). I've had the same issues when I've transferred data DIRECTLY onto the SD Card through my PC.
I have formatted and reformatted and unmounted and formatted the card 10s of times and have not been met with a solution.
I tried an old 8gb class 4 card in my phone, this was greeted with the same issues when transferring files whilst it was mounted in the phone. However when I used the PC directly I was not greeted with the problem! (Surprise surprise!)
Now as for pictures getting corrupted. Here is the best solution for you temporarily till we find a proper fix. Go into your phone settings, and make sure you are saving the pictures directly to phone storage. Then enable automatic upload into dropbox (Shouldn't be an issue as you get 52gb free space! ;) ). I have NOT lost a single picture when they are saved to phone storage.
One thing that nobody has mentioned in the thread is if their device is rooted. Mine is rooted. Now I work in a mobile phone repair shop, I spend all day trouble shooting problems similar to this. I've not actually come across this issue before. I inquired with my manager on the situation, his belief was that it was my root effecting it. He has 8 years of experience under his belt and I trusted his opinion. So went home that day and unrooted my device. Sadly however I was greeted yet again with the same issue! Maybe if you guys have a rooted handest you could try unrooting and see if that helped?
I did hope that the 4.3 update would help with this, and infact it has somewhat in regards to the music, some of it is now playable. I was shocked by this actually and immediatly put several gb of songs back onto the SD Card! SAME PROBLEM! :(
Now, I know that was a rather long post to read to but I hope it has clarified a few things for you guys. I will be ordering another Micro SD Card tomorrow and it'll be a Samsung one, I'll get back to you and let you know if I've had any success at all with it. For now I'd be grateful if everyone could list the type of Micro SD Card they are using. Like I said earlier, mine is a Micro SD 'HC'. There are several other types out there and I was wondering if that was something to do with the issue. I have only just found out about this on an Amazon review today actually! :P
Before Using Your SDXC Memory Card
SDXC standard-based memory cards and devices (digital cameras, video cameras, laptops, etc.) are now available. As an early adopter of the new SDXC standard, it is important that you understand how to use your new SDXC memory card to its greatest ability.
Confirm Compatibility
Before inserting your SDXC memory card into your device, confirm the device is compatible with the SDXC standard by locating an SDXC logo on the device or referring to the device's user manual or manufacturer information. Remember:
SDXC device......only SDXC card (64GB upto 2TB)
SDHC device.......both SD card and SDHC card (SDHC cards are 2GB up to 32GB)
SD devices........only SD card (Sdcard are up to 2GB only)
Understanding Backwards Compatibility
SDXC memory cards must only with SDXC devices.
SDXC devices can use SD, SDHC and SDXC memory cards.
SDHC memory cards can be used with SDHC and SDXC devices.
SDHC devices can use both SD and SDHC memory cards.
SD devices can only use SD memory cards.
Only Use SDXC Memory Cards in SDXC Devices
SDXC devices are backwards compatible, so they accept SD and SDHC memory cards. SDXC memory cards must only be used with SDXC devices and should never be used in non-compatible devices. If you need to format an SDXC memory card, you can typically format it by using your SDXC device or by using the SD Formatter 3.0 with your computer.
If an SDXC memory card is inserted into a computer or device that does not support the SDXC standard, a message may prompt you to format the card. Do not format the SDXC memory card in a non-compatible device because it will erase the data on the SDXC memory card and format the card for a different file system, making it incompatible with SDXC devices.
Possible Device Messages
1. Non-compatible computer
If you accidentally insert your SDXC card into a computer that does not support SDXC (using a direct SD slot or USB reader/writer), the following messages may appear:
Possible Messsages:
*You need to format the disk in the drive'X' before you can use it. Do you want to format it?
*The disk in drive 'X' is not formatted. Do you want to format it now?
CHOOSE NO/CANCEL!
DO NOT FORMAT, OTHERWISE THE CARD IS NO LONGER SDXC FORMAT...I.E. NO LONGER 64GB AND WILL ONLY RECOGNISE A MAX OF 32GB (27.9Gb ON PC)
2. Non-compatible Device
If you accidentally insert your SDXC memory card into an SDHC device that is not compliant, the following messages may appear:
Possible Messages:
*Card Error
*This card cannot be used
*Please check your card
*Format the card
CHOOSE NO/CANCEL!
DO NOT FORMAT, OTHERWISE THE CARD IS NO LONGER SDXC FORMAT...I.E. NO LONGER 64GB AND WILL ONLY RECOGNISE A MAX OF 32GB (27.9Gb ON PC)
SDXC Memory Cards for Computers
The exFAT file system used for SDXC is available on Microsoft Windows 7, Windows Vista and Windows XP (SP1 or later) with exFAT file system update (KB955704) available from the Microsoft Download Center.
You can access the SDXC card by using an SDXC compatible USB reader or adapter.
If you want to use an SDXC card in the SD slot on your computer, you need an SDXC compatible driver for the SD slot.*
Contact your computer manufacturer to confirm the SD slot on your computer is compatible with SDXC cards and for availability of the SDXC driver.
* An SDXC-compatible driver for the SD slot can be downloaded from the following Microsoft sites. However, please check with your computer manufacturer to determine if the following download is applicable to your computer before applying the download.
Windows 7 Drivers
32-bit Version...[...]
64-bit Version...[...]
Windows Vista Drivers
32bit Version..[...]
64bit Version...[...]
SD Formatter...[...]
From what that states is that my SD HC card CANNOT actually be 64gb. It should only be able to go up to 32gb! (Now if my card has HC and 64gb printed on it that to me is a dead give away that I might have been scammed!)
Anyway post your thoughts, I'll be eagerly awaiting replies!
Many Thanks,

Thanks a great deal for this reply!!
To help with the info:
my phone has never been rooted and my SD card is a Sandisk 32GB class 4 I believe (the card is currently sitting in my phone, empty and not in use..).
I'm (mostly, I guess like 95%) sure the SD card is legitimate. I got it from Amazon for a nearly 'full' price, the product had good reviews and the card was in "official" Sandisk packaging.
For storing and backing up photos and videos, I have been doing what you recommended - save to the phone memory for no chance of corruption and have the files be automatically upload to Dropbox. I also have them upload to Google+, as I mentioned in my previous posts. (Anyone know if you can also upload to SkyDrive as well? From the looks of the photos saved into there, SkyDrive keeps the best quality I think. I may try to upload the same photo to the 3 services, then redownload the files and compare hoe they may look, as well as just viewing them on each service..).
ANYWAYS, since I still have my card in my phone, I should see if corruption still occurs after the 4.3 update. I never thought about trying this since I kind of got used to not using my card after awhile..
Also, if that goes down the drain, I may also test how the card handles when transferring from my PC - then maybe even perhaps from another device, like my old HTC Design.
I haven't necessarily tried another SD card if I am recalling that correctly... One of the only other cards I think I have is a scam one my dad bought for $10 off eBay. It claimed to be a 64GB; but besides the memory size, it wasn't labeled at all hahah.
Oh, and to test to see if an SD card is legit, your could try the program "h2testw." I tested the scam card, which the h2testw informed me that it is actually an 8GB card. I may try the program in my Sandisk card to see if it truly is 32GB or not!
Sorry for the long reply, but hopefully it has helped in a way!

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
Hi!
After writing the post last night I decided to put a large quantity of stuff on my Micro SD Card, did this via the PC and left my phone out of it. I stuck 32gb of data onto the card, and this morning I couldn't access it, even in my PC. Now it's bringing to light that my issues are likely with the card, which for me is good news. Easy enough to replace eh!?
Anyway I am currently running H2Testw, on the card, to see how it goes. Hopefully I've been sold a scam card and I can just return that to Amazon! :)
Another thing to mention was the type of formatting your cards are using? My card is using an 'exFAT' formatting system, which is used on flash drives above 32gb. The Galaxy S4 IS compatible with this formatting system however seen as you are using a 32gb card I see no reason why you should be using exFAT. Instead you should be using FAT32. If you plug your Card into the PC and right click and hit Properties, a little window should open. Look for 'File System' if your card is exFAT try formatting it to FAT32. (No idea if this will help or not, but defiantly worth a shot!) Also If your card is formatted to NTFS, that needs to be changed too.
Also, when formatting you can change the allocated block size, from 512 bytes to 64 Kilobytes, this basically means how much data can be stored on one block. If your putting big files on then it might be appropriate to change the allocation size, however files like pictures and songs (2-3mb) shouldn't really need anything higher than a 4kb block. It might be worth playing around with that. Maybe try increasing the allocation size all the way to 64KB, I suppose there are not going to be any files smaller than that as it's a bloody 13mp camera! XD
Something a friend mentioned a few minutes ago was to try formatting it with a program called, HP USB Disk. He seemed to think that was more reliable. He was having issues with his card, and formatted it using that. That seemed to work for him. They were not the same issues, but that's worth a bash too. You can download it from PCWorld website. I'll be testing that out after I've verified the amount of legitimate space on my card. (Won't be for another 5-6 hours yet as it's a 64gb one! But I'll get back to you later tonight.)
Cheers!

SUCCESS!
Hi guys!
Update for you all, bought a 32gb class 4 Micro SDHC card! I took over 300 pics on the weekend an they are all there and stable. I'm guessing I was sold a dodgy card! I'd suggest returning the cards you bought and try a new one. Avoid Amazon if possible!
Good luck, let me know how you get on!

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
I was a little concerned with some difficulties setting up the 64gb sandisk card on my S4, as copying over large volumes of files always seemed to time out.
7 Months later--all is fine. No problems. No corruptions. No issues. Of course, I no longer have to copy over some 50gb of files. I think Samsung as others keep saying has some compatibility issues with certain types of formatting, and the name that seems to come up most often, anecdotal thought it might be, is SanDisk
BTW, another perhaps related issue---DocsToGo will no longer sync correctly (I sync to the card), always creating duplicate copies of certain files as if I had changed them in both places. Tech support advises that the problem is long file names and how Samsung handles them. Of course, long file names---merely around for 15 years or so. ;)

Hope it keeps working for you. With regard to Amazon, if you buy directly from Amazon and not a third-party seller it should be fine. I bought a SanDisk card from Amazon, had problems, checked with SanDisk, they sent me an RMA and replaced the card. I have no doubt it was a genuine card as otherwise SanDisk would not have replaced it.

I agree that buying directly from Amazon should be just fine, as what I did (and do for many other products).
I may think about looking for another Micro SD Card to see if they may work. Maybe there's a good deal of a legit SD card on Amazon for cyber week! Haha
I also yet have to see if my current card has corruption issues in my PC and perhaps my tablet as well. If they both also have problems, then it can be deduced the problem may stem from the card - otherwise the problem would be the phone and getting a new card *might* not fix it.
But good to hear you got things working, Bashkov! 😁

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
I fear my SD card may have finally crapped out and met the same fate as some of yours.
I've had the Samsung Galaxy S4 from Sprint since it was available in late April. Bought the SanDisk Ultra 64GB microSDXC Class 10 UHS-1 Memory card in early May off Amazon. Music, Photos, & Videos are the only things I keep on the SD card. I keep the apps on the Device Storage. There was a couple times (can count on one hand) over the last 6 months where the SD card "unexpectedly removed" itself then remounted itself. Nothing had changed and no music, or picture/video files had been corrupted/lost. ( I did back up everything to my PC periodically, thankfully.) When I received the phone, I had changed the settings for any picture taken to be saved in the Camera folder on the SD card automatically.
More recently when my device updated to Android 4.3, the SD card started removing itself and remounting itself much more frequently; many times per week, and sometimes, many times per day. Still, I was able to take pictures/videos and such that were automatically saved to the Camera folder on the SD card without any corruption incidents or disappearing. Also, anytime I downloaded a picture, took a screenshot, or put a photo on instagram, those photos save in their own Device Storage folders & I always moved the photos from their respective (Download/Screenshot/Instagram) folders on the Device Storage to their respective (Download/Screenshot/Instagram) folders on the SD card in my gallery...........
Until last Thursday Nov 28th (Thanksgiving). I was trying to have someone take a family picture at dinner and the photo appeared corrupted/had random colors pixels & lines all throughout the photo. Had the picture taken a 2nd time, and it turned out normal while saved in the Camera folder on the SD card. Then uploaded the picture to Instagram, so the picture also saved in its own Instagram folder on Device Storage in the gallery. Then as I usually have many times before, moved this photo from device storage Instagram folder to the SD card Instagram folder in the gallery. Next time I went into the gallery, the family picture was gone from the Camera SD card folder and Instagram SD card folder..... oh sh*t...... fast forward to tonight (haven't taken any pictures since Thanksgiving) I decided to test it out. 90% of the photos/videos I tested my camera with became corrupted. After leaving the gallery for the main menu, then going back in the gallery, the corrupted photos/videos disappeared from the Camera SD card folder. This is what I got:
Attachment 94979 Attachment 94980 Attachment 94982 Attachment 94983 Attachment 94984 And then they disappeared.
This is what my gallery normally looks like: Attachment 94987 As you can see, all 8 folders have the SD card icon in the lower left corner.
Then I took some screen shots that saved as usual to a Device Storage folder, thus adding another folder to the gallery, and took some photos with my camera after I changed the settings for pictures to be saved to Device storage instead of the SD card, the gallery then appeared as so with the 2 new folders... : Attachment 94988. The pictures were not disappearing/corrupting at all. I even restarted my phone, and the new screenshots left in their device storage folder still remained, and the camera pictures still remained in their device storage folder. Once I moved the test screenshots and test camera photos, to their respective folders on SD card folders, they were gone.
Important to note: all of the photos in the 8 folders I have on SD card up until last Thursday, are not corrupting & not disappearing at all. They appear to not be affected at all, no matter what I do with them. Only pictures taken from here on out since Nov 28th that are saved automatically into the SD card, or pictures that are saved in other folders on the device storage, then moved to SD card folders, are the only ones that are corrupting and then disappearing rather immediately. As it currently stands I have 31.49 GB of space remaining on the SD card (64 GB), but only about 7 GB of space left on Device storage. I've moved everything from my SD card to my laptop, so I wouldn't be against formatting the SD card now to see if that is a temporary fix. The only thing that will annoy me is losing all my playlists in the stock music player app that took a long time to put together. (Is it even possible to find the playlists and pull them off intact?) Or should I just give up and get a new SD card (but what kind of 64 GB card now that will work with Galaxy S4 with 4.3 operating system?) Not sure if I can get my SD card replaced or a refund since its been 6/7 months since I've had it. Just unsure of what my next step should be.
Any advice would be appreciated. :)

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
Here are some things you can try (based on reading many threads about corrupted SD cards) - you don't necessarily need to do all of these, but can start with one and see if that helps, then go from there:
Factory reset
Start phone in recovery mode and wipe the partition cache
Unmount the SD card, connect to your PC with a card reader, and run checkdisk error correction on the card (which the PC should read as a drive)
Format the SD card using the phone or PC (there's also some discussion on other forums about whether to format as exFAT or FAT 32; some people seem to think FAT 32 may have less problems)

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
After reading through all this thread, just thought I'd add a little more food for thought. Until last week, I had a Samsung Galaxy Ace (for three years) and was using a sandisk 8gb SD Card, and have never had any problems with it. About five days ago, I got a Samsung S4 Mini and some of the photos I have taken since getting this phone have been corrupted with half the photo being greyed out. The photos were saved straight to the card. Many of the posts in this thread refer to the SD card getting hot. In the Ace, the SD card just goes into a slot in the side of the phone. However in the S4 Mini it goes inside the phone underneath the battery, where it would get a lot hotter than it used to in the side of the Ace. Not sure where it fits on other Samsung devices that have had the same problem but seems to me that the heat theory may have some bearing. I took everything off the SD card, (moved apps back to the phone and saved all photos to my computer). Then unmounted and formatted the SD card. When I put the photos back on the same photos were still corrupted. Thumbnails are fine, but when you open the photo it's not. The same photos do not show correctly on my computer. So for now, have completely emptied the SD card and unmounted it. Won't bother with another one until someone comes up with a satisfactory solution, or when I run out of space. By the way, thanks to all who post on here. The more ideas that are thrown in, the more likely it is that someone will hit on a solution. :)

Sorry to hear you happened to get this problem, too! I appreciate the very informative rely with the screenshots!
I've seen the unmounting and removing of the card issue more often than the problem we now have in common. I myself have actually not experienced the unmounting problem - only the corruption one.
The first time I experienced the problem was when I got the new SD card and wanted to store my photos there. After transferring them all, all of them had the corruption problem where they were grayed out or had the black symbol.
When I had the problem for awhile, sometimes I would also see the thumbnails - but going to view the photo skewed the partially great ie black photo. (I'm curious - has anyone tried using Air View to see if they can view the corrupt picture through there? I'm not sure if using Air View just magnifies the thumbnail or if it pulls up the actual image, just smaller?).
I've also had the thumbnails, many times, turn into the black symbols after more time. And if I recall correctly, they would sometimes even turn straight into the symbol after taking the photo...
It almost seems like there are different states or levels of how bad a photo becomes corrupt (it may also apply to music and other files, but photos can be viewed in more ways I think - music and other files might be either corrupt or not corrupt, and there might not be a way to see HOW corrupt they are).
I've had issues with:
-The photo becoming blurry or lost its resolution. I've noticed these photos may usually just give up on themselves and become completely corrupt (black state) after some time
-The photo becoming partially or completely grayed out, sometimes (but not very often) with weird distortions or colors going through the picture
-Photos becoming corrupt to the black state "instantaneously" (though, there's no real way of telling how fast this actually happens [Maybe if we take a photo, we can watch the corner in the camera app where it shows the previous photo taken. It could be possible to see the photo turn black or something after some time, or maybe it might save black right away? I've never really thought about trying this]).
With these problems (I can't think of any other forms the issue can take), they seem to come in varying speeds. Either they become corrupt right away (multiple times, I've seen faster than the photos can be uploaded to Dropbox or Google+) or they take much longer.
The speed as well as the percentage of files becoming corrupt may depend on how many files are being transferred at once. (More being transferred = higher % corrupt).
When you mentioned the corrupt photos you had disappearing, did they just become invisible in the gallery or were they completely deleted? Maybe you can check the space you have on the card and see if the used space is now smaller. Perhaps, if they weren't deleted, the files can still be located in your files?
Good thing your previous files didn't become corrupt!
The only thing I can think of that has helped me (temporarily) is formatting the card on the phone. This does come at the price of deleting everything on the card though... (Although, on my other thread of this issue, someone did this but still had all their files on the card afterwards [they also said they some files were restored... I'm not sure how this may happen, and it seems pretty strange]).
For your music, are you able to transfer your playlists to your phone? I'm not sure how to go about doing that though 😯.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
Hi there,
I've have had problems with the sd card too in my Note 3. Apparently in Samsung devices it's a very common issue. It has to be with permissions to write on the sd card.
I first got a message saying that the sd card was damaged and it should be formatted. I saw a lot of unknown little files in the folders. After formatting the only folder that remained was google music, with a lot of strange files in it too (I don't use google music at all, so it was something I didn't find normal. Then it was totally impossible to store any file on the sd card (no writing permission) unless I unmounted and mounted again, for some minutes I was able to use it.
I then thought that maybe I could remove the google music folder and deleted google music app. Since then -two days- I haven't had any problem with the sd card. Maybe I'm wrong, but at the moment I suspect that the culprit was this app for some reason I don't get. Anyway, it's just a guessing, I will wait more days to see if it is solved.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
I recently had the same problem with my Galaxy Tab2 10.1: after a year with it and a SanDisk 32GB microSD, the microSD first started to refuse to show some photos, so I tried to reformat it with the Tab, and it corrupted it so badly it fails to be seen by any device. One totally dead card.
I contacted Samsung UK in the first instance. They were very good in that they telephoned me the very next day. The representative was very polite, and although you could say he was trying to fob me off, he did say that they would take the table in for investigating if I wanted. But basically, he was saying they have not had reports of problems so they aren't' aware of any such problem, and blame it on the card.
I wonder whether too many people are not actually contacting Samsung? From the number of posts here and elsewhere, it does seem to be a problem - yet they seem not to know about it? This can only be if people are not reporting it?
I also did a search "do all tablets corrupt microSD cards" - and so far, I've not found enough conclusive evidence, but it does appear that it is rare for other tablets to corrupt cards, so again, it seems to me we must all contact Samsung :)

It does sound pretty reasonable that not many people report this problem to Samsung, thus them not knowing about it or not having enough people having this problem to not do anything about it..

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
I have a similar problem with my note 3. I have a 16GB UHS1 sandisk card, I was using it on a note 2 just fine prior to moving it to the note 3. The problem is that the sd card content goes progressively worse, more and more files gets unaccessible for use over time and usually occurs after connecting to a usb cable to charge or to a pc. Once it gets completely unreadable a restart would usually fixes it and the cycle repeats again. Today it went and gonecompletely corrupted. I had around 9GB of data on it and they were completely gone, all that remain was the folders with corrupted names.
So I went and reformatted it. Going to see what happens next, or I'd try testing with another card.
This is a really annoying problem, having to reboot the phone and the occasional corrupt card.

Hi,
Does anyone have to solution to recovering the corrupted photo's? And why do we get a SanDisk SD card with a samsung phone, where Samsund SD cards are available?

Oh man, I'm sorry for your lost data! This problem is indeed very annoying and usually frustrating.
Have you reformatted that card before? Let us know how it goes, and good luck!

As of now, it seems like there hasn't been a solution yet. I haven't been able to try, but someone much earlier in this thread had a possible solution. I don't know if it works or not since I haven't tried it yet! I might in the future when I can, however.
But I'm not sure - when I got this phone, it didn't come with an SD card. Just the point itself (I have Sprint).
Which makes me ask the question: what carriers do you guys have? I doubt this has to do with anything about the SD card, but there could always be a slight chance of a pattern haha
Just a quick update of my problem: for a long while I had my card just sitting in my phone after I gave up using it. I decided to try it again approximately 3 weeks ago. What I did was first copied a great deal of photos AND videos from my phone to the card. This was to test if it could handle the huge amount of data being transferred over. What surprised me was that every single photo and video were perfectly fine (and still are)!
After seeing this, I started to take a ton of random pictures with my camera set to save directly to the SD card. These photos also were fine. For the next 10 days I believe, everything worked fine (I kept the camera saving to the card; all while still automatically uploading to Dropbox, etc.).
However, around the 10th day, the photos started becoming corrupt... They started from the newest photos to the older ones. It spread down to photos taken around the 5th day (photos from approximately days 5 through 10 ate now corrupt). Pretty strange...
I managed to get some screenshots of the "process"of the corruption..
First I noticed that I could still view the photo fine; just the thumbnail of the photo was broken.
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/01/02/usuny6y7.jpg
(Sorry for the odd photo hahaha)
Then I noticed the same thing spreading to other photos.
Oddly, I was also able to preview the album using Air View - even when the thumbnails for the album (and for the photos in them) are corrupt.
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/01/02/taza6ygu.jpg
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/01/02/u4eqe3av.jpg
Then, a few days later, after many of the photos became corrupt, I was able to preview some of the corrupt photos themselves.
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/01/02/my7uhyta.jpg
And now this is what I have (at this very moment, days after I last looked at the albums and files).
http://img.tapatalk.com/d/14/01/02/enyjybej.jpg
Honestly, this issue almost seems like some sort of disease hahaha
But hopefully this might have provided more information on what is happening!

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
Funny. Just got a new Samsung 2014 tablet 10.1
The SD card 64gb SanDisk that worked just fine in my Asus, no longer worked.
I had to reformat it IN THE TABLET, and suddenly all is well.
I wonder what Samsung does with its SD card issues. ;)

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
I don't know if anyone has caught this but this same corruption problem happened to me today with over 100 pics I took with my 12 day old S4! These were priceless pics I took of my daughter buying her wedding dress so I am furious.
I noticed that the corrupted pics (other pics on the sd card are fine for now), have a resolution of -1X-1. This is what the corruption is as without an output resolution, nothing can 'see' the picture even if the file size is still 1.5 MB as my current settings are.
Why is this happening? I installed a brand new 64 GB Samsung microsd card two days ago and had no issues until today!
Tomorrow I am taking this POS galaxy back to Verizon and get an iPhone like I had before. I spent about 45 minutes on the tech support line with Verizon and they were super nice but no luck. I now have zero confidence in Samsung but the worst part is that I have only ONE non-corrupted pic of my daughter trying on her wedding dress.
:(
Sorry for the rant.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
Hi all, registered as I have the same problem. Just to let you all know, don't waste money buying a Samsung sd thinking that will solve the problem. I have exactly the same problem with my Samsung mircoSDHC UHS-I card (pro) 64gb.
^Poster above me, Im sorry for your loss. I too lost important photos of me and my girlfriend enjoyng a meal in the shard for our first anniversary, I too was furious. However people in this thread have mentionned that they were able to recover their photos using firmware programs etc. Look through this thread. I'm going to try these methods shortly so don't give up hope!
When this first happened I thought it was because I didn't format card when I installed it. I formatted it and pics saved fine. I was still having problems with my music so I tried someone's advice on another forum which was to take card out restart phone without it then turn off and put card in again. This caused more problems as my device refused to recognise the card and I had to format again. Now I have the photo issue again and the music issue.
There MUST be a solution somewhere, let's keep looking

Apart from "recovery" programs, which may or may not work after the damage is done, I've always backed up instantly to the cloud. One nice backup feature (works with Facebook or Google+) is that if you set Facebook, etc to sync photos (sync tends to be turned on by default when you install the app), it will backup almost instantaneously, depending on whether you have it set for "wi-fi only" or wi-fi and data. Other programs will back up on a schedule and include other things---like Lookout antivirus---but the nice thing with this Facebook feature is that your pix are never lost if there is some emergency that destroys or loses the card.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
So it appears pictures saved to the internal memory on the phone do not have any issues, right? Only ones saved or moved to an SD card, regardless of brand?
My card is a brand new Samsung MicroSD 64 GB and the only pics impacted were 99% of the ones I took yesterday or moved to the card yesterday during the afternoon. I did test pics later after we got home saved directly to the card and THOSE pics did not corrupt! Yet...?
Hopefully I can recover the corrupt ones. The really weird thing is how the output resolution was corrupted to -1 X -1 Resolution.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
I have just recently purchased the Galaxy s4 and have had problems with the micro sd card. I loaded in my old card from my previous phone it was a 32g class 10 samsung card. It had a large collection of songs and a couple of play lists that I got to enjoy for a few days. I was impressed with the fact that I got to listen to them for 10hours before my bluetooth batteries would die on me, pretty impressive. A few days latter my phone no longer recognized the card. I coul dnot even view the card on my computer with a card reader. I then stuck in a cheaper 8g class 4 card that I had loaded it with a a bunch of music and got to play that for a while. then I was trying to take a picture and it wasn't working so good for me. phone locked up had to remove the battery. when I reinstalled the battery and tried again no luck. I was running short of time so I just turned the phone off. less than 1/2 hour later had another look the pnone did not recognize the card any more and the battery had gone from 98% to 17% battery.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
I went back to Verizon today and dumped my S4 and got back in the iPhone 5S.
These issues with the S4 are too widespread. I'm just hoping I can save my pics it ruined yesterday.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
For the record, I have had an S4 for nearly a year now. I had to reformat 1 card (*that, in the Galaxy Note 2014, not the S4). I have never had a corruption issue, or lost data and once reformatted the cards worked perfectly. I've been using the same 64gb SanDisk in my S4 since the beginning. It shows no problems at all.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
crazy question but is everybody just installing the micro SD cards in the device, or are they formatting them before 1st use? I had a card I didn't format corrupt on me (saved it with a scan disk & defrag on my PC), but have since changed to a bigger card, which I formatted first using my device

When I got my card, I just put it in and formatted it right then and there with my phone. Didn't have it in another device prior

Curious on how your res is -1 x -1. Mine tend to keep their resolution - but a lot of other data seem to be gone (see the photos). I have a screenshot of a corrupt and good photo taken from my phone.

Since the corrupt photos still have a reading of memory on them (ie the 3.2 MB etc), perhaps, just maybe, this shows that they still have memory of what the photo was of and thus the picture can be recovered? I'm not sure how much of the space used by the file can be for much else

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
When I was at Verizon yesterday, the associate said he had not heard of these SD Card issues with the S4. However - when I told him what had happened and about the threads on this website, he went and looked in his Verizon forums and online tech support and found that yes, there is a reported error with some (not all) S4s involving the phones firmware/harddrive and its ability (or failure) to not only save photos directly to the SD card from the camera but when photos are moved. It has to do with how the phone's drive 'communicates' the data for the pictures and corrupts it in doing so.
He offered to swap my S4 for a new S4 but when I asked him if he could guarantee another replacement if it happened again he said that would up to Samsung as it would then be a warranty issue. I did seriously consider upping the ante and getting the 32 GB S4 but they would have had to order it. So, I decided to go back to the iPhone 5S.
Now, I'm trying to recover my photos using the ZAR program which is running as I'm typing this. Having read through mutliple threads about this issue, I am 100% confident the problem is with the phone and NOT with the cards. I had a brand new Samsung 64 GB Class 10 card. While at Verizon yesterday, I showed him the corrupted 'photos' and even took some then tried to transfer them which they then immediately became corrupt.
I believe his statement that the problem is in SOME (not all) S4's hard drive/firmware is dead on. While a few issues may have been with questionable cards or practices, I have no doubt this is an S4 issue. Good luck to all who are frustrated with this issue as I don't see any quick resolution until Samsung initiates a recall of the affected phones and offers replacement with proven good devices.

Good to know that there are at least some other forums taking about this issue.
If it IS the firmware, I'm assuming that an update from Samsung might be able to fix it? (I'm just saying this since you can update the firmware of the device in the settings..). Unless it's possible that there's some sort of physical error in the device that wouldn't allow OTA updates to fix it..?
But hopefully the program you're using works for you! Let us know how it turns out. I still haven't managed to try and do something about my corrupt photos. I'm curious if it can work for me haha
Oh btw, I'm to lazy to look for it, but how long is the warranty for the phone, or does it depend on the carrier? Because I recently (a few months or less ago) got a different issue with my phone not giving me any notifications at all when receiving a text. I don't know if this is a carrier issue or the phone. So if I could, perhaps I could trade for a new S4.. 😞

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
Well, after downloading four different recovery programs I still am not able to recover a viewable photo from the session of my daughter trying on wedding dresses. I tried Recuva, ZAR, Vibo-Soft, and Remo Recover) - all had zero luck in recovering the corrupted files except Remo Recover but even the 'recovered' photos showed up as Corrupted File and I was not able to preview/view them.
The photos are in the DCIM portion of the SD card. They are there taking up ~1.5 MB space per picture yet all say they have an output resolution size of -1 x -1 pixels! How can that be?
Does ANYONE know of a program that might be helpful?

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
It's interesting to read this is continuing to happen to more of us, and some are asking when will Samsung provide an update...yet no one seems to actually be telling Samsung about the problem, even saying they've heard Samsung deny there's a problem. So, please, do tell them :)
I'm lucky that at the moment, SanDisk are accepting the card may have a fault, so I'm pursuing that to at least get a replacement card.

Well I did via their customer support website per this email below:
Hello,
I want to express my extreme disappointment with the quality of your Galaxy S4 phone. (By the way, your drop down menu does not show the model number SCH-1545 as a choice!). I used this phone to take ~85 pictures of my daughter buying her WEDDING DRESS on Saturday, saving the pictures directly to the brand new Samsung Micro SD 64 GB Class 10 memory card - and the phone ultimately corrupted everyone of them but 1, as well as other pictures I had stored on the memory card.
Research into this problem via several internet forums shows that this is a CHRONIC problem with the S4, so much so that many people are running from your product.
I had just purchased this phone on January 2 and it had been flawless until Satruday - when it ruined the most important pictures I had taken with it. This is NOT a random event - search the internet and you will see that this is a HUGE issue.
I took my S4 back to Verizon and even they confirmed this issue; their own tech forums cite repeated issues of the S4's firmware corrupting (in random events) photos when either saved directly to an SD card OR when moving from the device's internal storage to the SD card.
Due to this huge problem, I promptly returned my phone and purchased an Apple iPhone 5S.
Again - I am extremely disappointed in your product. I purchased mine at Verizon Wireless in Oregon Ohio and unless you fix this issue will never again buy a Samsung product and will tell everyone I know how unreliable your devices are.
Disappointed in Ohio...
Regards,
XXXXX

I've had good luck with this:
Memory Card Recovery Software to Recover Lost Photos - CardRecovery
NB:
If you have a card problem, it is important to take it out and stop using it immediately. Once sectors are overwritten with new data, it may be impossible to recover files.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
I haven't read the whole thread but read enough to understand I had the same issue. Some videos were copying over and others copied corrupted. After reading this thread I decided to call Samsung regarding my Note 3 SD card issue. After transferring me to tech support the guy said he wanted to verify the card and he asked me to take it out, look on the back, and read off the model number. I stopped right there and told him there were no numbers. He then went on to say the card was counterfeit and there is a wide spread issue at the moment regardless of if you buy it from Amazon, Bestbuy or Walmart.
When I was having the issue mt transfer rate within the device was 3 mb tops. I just bought a new Sandisk and its transferring at 7 -10 mb. I transferred my vids and they all work at the moment. I'll update tomorrow and see if its still good.
Verify your card is legit. You can just Google images your card and make sure it looks right front and back.

Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
Antonio - how could you verify the card is legit without opening the package, etc, before you buy?
Great reply and insight.

I just walked into a radio Shack and explained the issue I had. I asked them what their return policy was and then had them open it right in front of me. Any known retail store will do the same or you can open it, look at it and say okay changed my mind here is the receipt for the card I bought 30 seconds ago.
I bought original one from Amazon and called their customer support. I didn't want to open a case against the seller because of the Samsung tech saying its a wide spread issue and not a retailers fault. Amazon send me a paid shipping label and will refund my cash once they receive the card.
I called Samsung to begin with because that many SD cards going bad sounded odd to me without it being a known or device issue. The counterfeit aspect makes sense
-
Re: Micro SD Card Corruption Issues
I just typed out this long response and it disappeared...
I just walked into a Radio Shack and asked them what their return policy was. I then had the clerk open the card in front me and I installed it right in the store. Any reputable retailer will let you open the item before you buy and even if they don't they have to have a return policy.
I purchased by initial card at Amazon. I called their customer service and explained the issue. They sent me a prepaid shipping label and will refund my money once they receive the card.

You may have gotten a bogus card, but in my case it was a genuine SanDisk, verified by SanDisk because they provided a replacement by RMA.
