If you like Nova, then WidgetLocker is the next obvious choice.

If you want to go crazy, get into using Tasker. Here's the best tutorial I've found:

Some apps i love and use every day (no order, just those which come to mind):
QuickPic — picture viewer, best one IMO and absolutely free.
pFolio — this one is for Picasa if you use it.
DeadBeef — free music player, can play virtually any file format.
    BSPlayer — video player.
Total Commander — good old file manager now on Android.
    feedly — news reader.
Pocket — best way to bookmark things to read later.
TuneIn Radio — tons of online radio stations, every genre/style you want and what not.
I have a lot of apps installed so i don't know… you want games too? Do you plan to root?

Rooting gives superuser access to your device. Some apps are root access only, some give more options.

Here are some of my most utilized apps.

K-9 Mail - Great email app. Highly customizable.

ES File Explorer - Great UI. Supports gestures +drag & drop.

Secure Gallery - Allows you to securely hide pics/videos.

    ePSXe - Great playstation emulator.

Soundhound - Great music identifier. Can Identify some songs by humming.

My Boy! - Great Game Boy Advance emulator.

Kindle - Probably doesn't need an explanation lol.

Goodreads - Great for reviewing books you may want to purchase.

Push to Kindle - Helps you push webpages to your Kindle to read later.

Zooper Widgets - Great for creating minimalistic Widgets and for general customization of your phone. Can really do some neat things if you know how to use it.

FeedR - Great feed reader app. Was my go to after googles feed reader was axed.

Simple Rss Widget - Puts select feed previews on your screen. Has a minimalistic look. Is customizable. Is compatible with Feedly.

Go SMS - Great sms app...once you figure out how to get the mms working. Highly customizable.

AlarmDroid - Highly customizable alarm app. Highlights are talking clock and obstacles.

Weatherbug Elite - Great weather app. Lovely UI.

App Lock - Choose the apps you want to put passwords on. Has an ugly Widget (or shortcut can't remember which) that allows you to tap to activate the lock.

Power Toggles - Highly customizable. Place Toggles on your screen or in your notification bar for wifi, blue tooth, gps...etc

Wifi Manager - The default wifi manager leaves more to be desired, this takes care of that.

Color Notes - Put sticky notes on your screen. Change the color if you'd like.

BS Player - Because the stock video player may not support certain formats.

FIREFOX - Mostly useless as a browser. Has an add on that allows you to download video (w/ the exception of YouTube videos) from the web. Also has a neat way of saving sites for offline reading. You can save pages there then push them to Kindle.

V Player - Because the player you got to support extra video formats may be having trouble with a particular file.

Back Talk Free - It's not useful but can be entertaining. Use on wifi.

Onavo Extend - Saves mobile data via compression and utilizing a cache that you choose the size of.

Onavo Count- Monitors how much data certain apps use.

Equalizer - Make your own equalizer profiles.

Spotify - If you pay the 10 a month you can download music onto your device for offline listening. Terrible UI though.

    Wakelock Detector - For wakelocks.

Better Battery Stats - For tve wakelocks Wakelock Detector may have missed.

Out of Market (must be careful when choosing where to download from):

Flashplayer - Download the last version of Flashplayer for Android so that you can view flash content in supported browsers.

TubeMate - Buggy app that ultimately allows you to download YouTube videos. Be careful of where you get it from.
Power Flipfonts - An apk that puts TONS of fonts on your phone.

    Suggestions to maximize battery life?

Well here's what I do to maximize my battery life. I use power saving mode and have turned off most of the features that I don't use for example Smart Stay and just about every Motion feature on the phone excluding Direct Call. I have also disabled a lot of the bloatware--Including S-Voice--which has a tendency behave as a frequently used program and run in the background. I don't clear my RAM or use task killers as I have learned that the RAM holding programs actually should help your battery life if you use these programs frequently, though I admit this was counter-intuitive at first. The display uses the most battery so I use Auto Brightness when it's too sunny out and have the brightness turned to the lowest possible setting otherwise. I also try to use dark themes and wallpapers as, from my understanding, the pixels of AMOLED displays are turned off when producing black. I have blue tooth and Wifi turned off so that they aren't constantly trying to find a connection. (I leave gps on though to take advantage of Android Device Manager; gps only runs when requested by an app so depending upon what apps you use the impact on overall battery life should be negligible.)

I used to use the paid version Juice Defender, which can help save battery life to some extent, but after the update to 4.1.2 and a factory reset, I find my phones battery drain isn't as bad so I don't use it. Plus, it mostly saves battery when the screen is off so it's kind of useless to me overall.

The number one way to save battery is to be careful of your usage especially if you browse the internet and aren't on WIFI.
