S4 message notifictions -customise mp3??

Is there a way to choose an mp3 for a message alert tone on the S4?

You want to use your own sounds or just to select from existing ones?

I'd like to use my own mp3's.

Then put your mp3s in Notifications folder on phone's internal SD, reboot, then go to Messaging, Settings, Select ringtone. Just tap on it and you'll get the list of all notifications sounds on phone, choose one you like, OK and enjoy.
