Compass on S4 not always right, points in random directions

When I use Google maps with my GPS turned on, it is always spot-on at telling me my location. However, the actual direction that the arrow is pointing is only accurate about 50% of the time. Sometimes it will be a decent amount off, say 45degrees, or sometimes it will be in the complete opposite direction. And I live in a residential neighborhood, without any tall buildings. It can be confusing when I'm using Google Maps to help me get somewhere on foot. Any suggestions on how to fix this?

Do you have a smartcover? The magnet that the smartcover uses to trigger the sleep/wake function might interfere with the magnetic sensor for the compass.

As far as I understand, GPS can only tell you which direction you're traveling, not which direction your receiver is pointed. Which is where your compass comes in. Your not particularly accurate compass.

I don't have a smartcover. Just a cheap plastic cover with no metal or magnets. I don't recall having this problem on my last two android phones.
