I want to be alerted ONLY when I receive text message, email or whatsapp message.....NOT any other beep, tinkle and fairy dust sound.....

I am unable to find how to differentiate tones on GS4 preferably without an app.....but a decent app or workaround (no rooting please) would be greatly appreciated.

Extra points: can anyone tell me the difference on VOLUME setting between slider for NOTIFICATIONS and SYSTEM??????

Thanks to all who considered dilemma.

If you pull the notification area down and long press on the sound icon, you'll be able to manage the notifications from Samsung.
But from whatsapp or a different app you'll have to go into settings for that app and manage it from there.

Notifications is self explanatory.
System volume is the sounds your phone makes, for example when you turn the display on or off.

Thanks for the quick response....your suggestion is merely a shortcut to settings>sounds...... what do you suggest from there?

Sorry I didn't answer sooner, I'm at work.
You mean on the first replay to the sound?

Re: How do I separate S4 alerts?

No problem....not sure what you mean......

My phone makes all kinds of noises when it is updated, in range of wifi, etc., etc. These appear to be on same control as the only ones I need PHONE and SMS.

How do I separate out the 2 I need (Phone and Text) and silence the rest?

Thanks again.

Have you tried what I suggested?
If you pull down the notification area and long press the sound icon you'll get all the options for sound.

You can also just press one of the volume buttons and you'll see this:

Re: How do I separate S4 alerts?

I think we're getting somewhere. My phone does not have the same sound choices as yours.

Verizon Samsung Galaxy S4
Model: SCH-1545
Android Version 4.3 (Updated 1/13/14)
Baseband Version: I545VRUEMK2
Kernel Version: 3.4.0
Hardware Version: 1545.06

I'm somewhat of a newbie....however every verizon tech person told me that these notifications cannot be separated and I can't find an app to quiet everything but phone call and SMS ringtones.

thanks again for your patience and help.

I've never used that app, but try each slider and test with texts and calls to your cell. You'll find which one is the one you need.

Have you discovered which settings are right for you?
Is the app working to your liking?

Thanks for the following Ambassador.

Your suggestion and the app seem perfect.

Unfortunately, as an elder born on the "wrong" side of the digital divide,it is taking me quite some time to figure out all the possible settings, profiles, etc. and making them play nicely with my phone. I am confident, however, this is the tool for the job.

I really appreciate your help, patience and reaching out.

Much gratitude.
