How to stop random reboots on Galaxy S4 after update?

A

AC Question

I'm in the UK and on the EE network. About 2 days ago I got the software update notification which I accepted. After the update the phone now randomly reboots for no reason. I know it not the battery as it has just been replaced and its fine. The forst time it happened was half an hour after the update was complete and I have not installed any apps since.

Setings screen says Android v 4.4.2

When is the next update out or is there a fix/workaround for this?
Thanks for any help in advance guys.

Re: Galaxy S4. 4.4 Random Reboot Issue

I had to make an account to reply.
I wiped the cache partition like you suggested but the problem persists.
Its a royal pain as every reboot takes a chunk of battery with it.

Re: Galaxy S4. 4.4 Random Reboot Issue

Glad to know I'm not the only one facing this problem. I'm also in the UK and same thing happens to me after the 4.2.2 update some days ago. My phone keeps freezing the screen and then rebooting. Even if I'm just listening to music it keeps rebooting. This is really annoying. I cannot even listen to music in a train!

Any idea how to get around this? Do we need to wait for an update? Once I finally fix this, I will consider it twice before upgrading android next time. Upgrades are not supposed to ruin your device but to improve it!

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Re: Galaxy S4. 4.4 Random Reboot Issue

I too have been having this problem, but it seems only to occur when my S4 is connected to the Samsung Multimedia docking station. I hear it rebooting all night if I put it in the doc. Even if the phone is not fully recharged, it reboots. Sometimes more than10 times during an overnight doc. I thought it was the dock itself since it only happens when the S4 is in it. So I sent away for a new one and lo and behold I got the same result with the replacement dock. The batter is fine; no warping or other issues that people have identified as part of the cause. I just tried a cache partition wipe, and will see if this fixes it. In dock now and so far no reboot but oddly it mainly seems to happen at night so don't know for sure. Any thoughts on why this is happening only when docked?

Re: Galaxy S4. 4.4 Random Reboot Issue

Welcome to all of you as new members.
I'm sorry that the Cache Partition wipe had no effect....I thought there was a good chance that it would and also it's said by some to be good practise after a system update. I'm afraid that at the present moment I can't think what else to suggest, except perhaps that reposting in the Samsung Galaxy S4 forum (I'm not sure whether you all have that phone) may be more likely to elicit help and advice than here, to the extent that it may be a device-specific problem.

I think I've found the issue..

It seems to be Light Flow causing the issues (on mine at least). I've uninstalled Light Flow and it hasn't randomly rebooted for a few hours now.. It's looking promising so far

Re: Galaxy S4. 4.4 Random Reboot Issue

I have twilight installed on mine which I updated yesterday. I fiddled with the auto settings and it seems to be ok for now. There was an annoying bug though which kept switching on the auto brightness setting on the phone but again I changed the twilight app settings and it seems ok.

Scratch that it is still happening.

Re: Galaxy S4. 4.4 Random Reboot Issue

I posted this problem in the Galaxy S4 forum under the title "V 4.4.2 Random Reboot Problem" as a solution has not yet been found.

Re: Galaxy S4. 4.4 Random Reboot Issue

Also in the UK and on T-Mobile (EE)... I updated my device to the latest software the other day (early September) and I've beenbeen inundated with random reboots/restarts....

I've heard about the bulging battery and it isn't that as that would just turn the device off? This is different... It displays the Samsung logo and the coloured oval shape and a few seconds later everything is back to normal!! Very quick reboots (not instant of course but relatively faster)

Anybody know?? Glad imnot the only one...

My friend also recently updated his s4 on 4GEE and 1.7GB of memory is being consumed when there's no apps running!! His device of very slow and laggy?

Usually the Ram is between 700-900MB idk what is going on??

Going to try and clear cache via holding the buttons down and then I'll manually reboot it and see what's what... It's fine atm it hasn't restarted itself for a while now but maybe that's because it's on charge?!

So far I'm taking it as a sign that I need to upgrade after a year of S4... Now I'm 'ready to note' on the Note 4 :D :D :D

Re: Galaxy S4. 4.4 Random Reboot Issue

I'm having the same problem here, it seems to have started after a software update. I'm also in the UK on T-mobile (part of EE): The version reported is 4.4.2 on the settings screen. I've tried removing the SD card, but crashes still occur. All my apps are up to date.

This is absolutely infuriating: If anyone has any ideas as to what this is, I'd love to hear them. Note: I'm a software developer, so I'm comfortable running debugging tools, posting logs from the device etc. Please tell me what would help to diagnose this and I'll provide it.

Re: Galaxy S4. 4.4 Random Reboot Issue

Tell me about it. I have wiped the cache partition 20 times and still no success. I fear a factory reset may be needed but I really don't want to go down that route. Its a last resort but I've had this issue for days now.

Don`t do that, pointless. I did, even re-installed the phone from Kies, same problem with 4.4.2 I9505XXUGNG8. Just random restarts....

Seems like it is a software issue.
Anyone any idea when the next update will be released?

I just emailed Samsung UK support to ask about the issue. I reccommed everyone emails them explaining the issue so they actually prioritise the next update.

Re: Galaxy S4. 4.4 Random Reboot Issue

I also emailed them, please to too. The more, the better.

This issue is getting me! I cannot even listen to 2 or 3 consecutive songs without the phone rebooting. And I am not going to buy a new phone because they ruined mine with an update!

PS: Has anyone tried downgrading the android version to the previous one? I don't want to do it if some tried already and doesn't work :(

Re: Galaxy S4. 4.4 Random Reboot Issue

I think it might be something related to connections. When I use the phone with Flight mode enabled it works fine (you can activate WIFI when in flight mode), so this makes the phone a bit more usable at home. I can at least play music now!

Re: Galaxy S4. 4.4 Random Reboot Issue

Samsung told me to do a factory reset but I have read that it won't fix this issue so I decided not to do it. Apparently a factory reset would not reset the firmware version so it pointless. I messaged them back but I have not received another email.

Edit: Samsung emailed me back suggesting I get a "Specialist Engineer" to look at my device at a local authorised Service centre or they could arrange to come and pick up my device. Seems a bit excessive when the fault appears to be with Samsungs update.
