How to make the phone maintain packet data connection?

I have a server I need to maintain a constant SSH connection to.

What happens is, whenever phone goes to sleep, connection breaks. Whenever I connect to WiFi, connection breaks (I assume because the phone either shuts down packet data, or changes routing).

What I need is, the terminal client (I use JuiceSSH now, but will use anything if it works) to maintain the packet data connection ALWAYS, no matter what happens, unless I manually tell it to disconnect. I need other applications to either use WiFi when available or ask me what to use.

Is it possible on Android? Worked like a charm on Symbian...

Phone is stock Galaxy S4 GT-I9505 running stock 4.4.2

Set Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep to always. It's probably just the wifi radio turning off that's doing it, but it could be the client or the server doing something unusual. (If it takes more than keeping the radio on, you'll need to write a "keep-awake" app to ping the server every <whatever the timeout period is minus a few seconds>, resetting every time you actually talk to the server or it talks to you. Just sending it an EOL should work.)
