At 6:00pm on Saturday May 2, 2015, I saw a message that the SIM card was not recognized -- after six months of OK operation.

Jiggling the SIM card gave no joy.

Installing the SIM card from my wife’s S4 worked OK.

I called AT&T to activate a spare unused SIM card. AT&T advises this is a known hardware issue with the S4 and advises “free phone upgrade” -- that actually costs $35/mo for 30 months. I disregard suggestion and activate. No joy.

I dig out a unused old 3G SIM card with same contacts pattern as wife’s SIM and activate that. Joy.

So, it appears that AT&T changed the S4 software/firmware on Saturday, and the new software no longer recognized some SIM cards. No longer recognized is 46818; recognized are 72290 and 72288.
