My boyfriend was given an S4 yesterday from a friend. Everything worked on it so he transfered his stuff over. Woke up this morning for work and it was still fine. He said that he went to check the time on the phone this afternoon and the screen was frozen, so he pulled the battery, put it back in and turned the phone back on. The screen was completely black but still responsive. He doesn't understand what happened because he never dropped it or got it wet. It was just frozen one minute and black after he restarted it.

Could something have become disconnected inside the phone? It was just so random because it was working just fine.

Any help would be appreciated, thank you!

Check out the following article :-
What to Do When Your Android Phone or Tablet Won’t Turn On
Extract :-
In some cases, your phone or tablet might begin booting, but the Android operating system might crash or freeze immediately.
To fix this, Android can boot straight to a recovery mode menu, where you can perform a factory reset. If your device is booting up before freezing or experiencing other serious problems, use recovery mode to perform a factory reset.

Just (when the phone is OFF) press Volume Up + Home + Power and in Recovery mode choose Wipe Date/Factory Reset, then reboot. Should be work now!
