I'm trying to upgrade my galaxy s4 operating system from the 4.3 jellybean to the 4.4 kitkat. I went into my software update and it says it's up to date so I'm guessing I have to obviously do it manually. So the first step is rooting my phone yes? Then what? Much help in detail would be appreciated. :)

Welcome to Android Central! Which exact S4 model is it? Check the Settings>About Phone>Model Number.

Have you tried using Samsung Kies or Samsung Smart Switch?

You may not be able to. If your carrier is straighttalk apparently their phones are locked & can't be UNlocked. If your model is SM-S975L like mine, the thread here may help. One person says no, but another does give another idea to try. Good luck!
