How to get the keyboard to rotate?

Hello all,

The Galaxy S5 is my first phone without a qwerty keyboard and I'm fine for the most part but at times I'd like to have the keyboard rotate when I hold the phone sideways for larger keys to press. At one point when I got the phone it seemed to do it but now no longer will. Looking on advice for what can do to re/enable the keyboard to turn. Here is some pertinent info:

I have screen rotation enabled (via the widget up top)
I have google keyboard installed
I use the stock Messages app for text messaging

Make sure you do not have smart rotation enabled under :

settings/display/screen rotation uncheck smart rotation
