The 4.4.4 update changed the 911 press to dial, to a Slide to the right to open the dialer.

that should stop the false 911 calls.

I'm using the s5 active on cricket instead of AT&T. I went to software update and it said there were no software updates available. Since AT&T owns cricket is there anything I can do to get updated to 4.4.4?

Not familiar with Odin but just googled it and see its for rooting Samsung devices. Are the 4.4.4 roms all heavily customized? I'd prefer to stay close to stock samsung. And will this erase all my data?

There are a few lock screen apps which function like stock but remove the emergency call option. Like lg lock screen.

Sure phones are not toys, but some of you do not understand that there are times when your toddler needs to be kept busy somehow in certain situations or settings.

Thanks for the tip. I installed the LG lock screen and it seems fine for now. Maybe later I'll look into rooting but for now this should work

My wife and I both got the Galaxy S5 Active. So far so good, specially when you have children at home.

One of the problems we've had since switching is how easy is to dial 911 from the lock screen. Case in point, so far our 3 year old has called more than 5 times by accident just by pressing what he sees on the screen, not knowing what he's doing.

Called AT&T and they're saying they can't block 911 by law, which I understand. What concerns me is how EASY Samsung has made it for anyone to dial 911 via the ICE Address book. It's a special contact that is hidden in the Address Book and shows only there. I reached out to Samsung Support via twitter, and their response was not too promising. I've attached a screenshot of a proposed idea, but shot down. I wish they could take this more seriously.

Calling 911 is no joke and while hiding the phone from toddlers is an option, it can happen again.

Who said they said whip? As long as it is not abusive, sure it works without any harm. The person will understand as they get older. Why even talk about this, but your opinion is not without merit, there are crazies, but I recognize the poster as a tough parent, it is their right as well. This is an explosive topic like politics, will never get a majority to agree. If you can teach kids to behave with just words, that is excellent, it does work, and it also does not work. I support it, but minimally. Both are right or wrong. Zero sum gain. I ended up hitting 911 by pulling my HTC 1 M8 out of the backpack, I guess I need to slap myself, well mentally.

File a complain with the FCC. My S5 pocket dialed 911 a few times. AT&T won't offer you a real solution, neither Samsung. Complaints to the FCC will get AT&T attention to this serious problem.

Have you tried Kid Mode? It offers its own lockscreen that requires tracing or writing a letter to unlock the phone. While in Kid mode the child can play games, watch videos and more. You can also add your games (other apps) to what they are allowed to do and it grows with them. Register and it offers age appropriate things for them to do. We used it with our kids until they were old enough to start asking to download their own games. Meanwhile there are draw backs. When we upgraded we let the kids have the old phones. They could still do all of the stuff they liked, but Kid Mode only works with a network connection, i.e. WiFi or Carrier. On non activated phones this meant the kids could only play if we had WiFi. Also there is no dialer on the lock screen so no accidents and they can only get to Kid Mode, that is until they see you unlock it once or twice.
Emergency Dialing still works in Kid's Mode. Trust me, my kid does it at least once a week.
