phone alerts for no reason

Hi-can anyone help me figure out why my phone is making the alert noise for no reason? It makes the sound like it's alerting me to new email but then nothing shows up in the notification bar to tell me what it's alerting me to. I've turned off alerts for anything other than texts or VM and given them their own sound and this is different. It makes the sound a few times an hour even when it's in silent mode so it's really annoying! Please help!

Welcome to Android Central! Is it the default notification tone, or an unusual one? If it's not the default, it could be the NFC (Near Field Communication) chip, which may chime if there is something else with a NFC chip nearby. Otherwise, check all of your apps for their notification settings. Yahoo Mail is a common culprit for notification tones without anything in the notification bar.
