Will a Galaxy S5 support 256 GB memory cards when available?

When I bought my S5, I had the 64gb cards from my old Note 3, so I just plugged it into the new phone. Shortly after that, I ran out of space, so I bought the Sandisk 128gb MicroSDXC when it was on sale on Amazon for $96.

Well.. the 128gb card is now full.(only less than 200mb remaining) I have been swapping the 64gb and 128gb cards back and forth.

When will there be a 256gb MicroSDXC card? Any chance that it will be here within the next few months? There are already 256gb regular SD cards... I bought the PNY 256gb SD card for only $110 last month and it worked great on my HD camcorder. However, it required a firmware update to see the full capacity of the 256gb SD card.

Will the S5 be able to accept 256gb MicroSDXC cards when they become available?

Thanks!

What in the world do you have stored on those SD cards?

I cannot imagine ever getting close to filling one up.

You need to get the USB dongle to allow you to use an external USB hard drive.

Hopefully nothing important because when it just randomly quits working none of it will be retrievable.

That's what I'm thinking
And no, I doubt the S5 will ever support higher capacity SD cards
You'll have to wait for phones in the future or use an external hard drive to put the data on

I don't see why it wouldn't. Phones which were released a few years before the 128GB micro SD card support it.

You could fill it up pretty fast with movies but I agree, that is a lot of space to fill up on a phone. Lol

Guys it could be lots of lossless music, 4k recordings or movies. Anyway the S5 does not support over 128gb, gotta wait for GS6 or GS7 for 256gb

Try to delete those old files and unwanted /watched movies so that you can free up some space for your new files.

If those files are important, then you should store them into a separate storage such as your external drive or cloud.

I can't imagine watching all the movies inside the memory card in one day. :)

Actually the SD format (SDXC) 128GB cards use is universal all the way up to TB's. Theoretically you could use any capacity. Haven't you noticed that a lot of times manufacturers will rate their phones for 16, 32, or 64GB and all the higher capacities work?

Doesn't the phone reindex all the files on the external storage every time it reboots? I have a 32 GB card in a phone and it takes a few minutes even for that one. That's the only thing I wonder about. Otherwise it's easy to fill up those large capacity cards. If you transfer a bunch of things from a hard drive you can fill them up before you know it.

I haven't rebooted my S5 in almost two month. Just out of curiosity, I just rebooted it a few minutes by doing a battery pull. It took 19 seconds to boot up.(pressing the power button to the homescreen appearing with all apps loaded) I tried it again by leaving out the nearly-full 128gb MicroSDXC card. This time, it took 17 seconds to boot. So I guess it needed the extra two seconds to index the files?

For those wondering about what junk is on my 128gb MicroSDXC:

Photos, about 22GB
Videos(saved YouTube 720p videos), 12gb
Videos(ripped Blu-ray at 720p), 10gb
Videos(take with S5), 20gb
Audio(Apple Lossless codec, original from my 80gb iPod Classic), 42gb
PDF: 15gb
Pictures(not from camera), 2gb

I take the music with me because I like listening to them uncompressed. Also, 90% of the places I travel with my phone can't even get Verizon data signal, so music streaming isn't possible. AT&T only has 3G in my area.... T-Mobile is still at 2G EDGE.

and yes, all of the files on the card are routinely backed up to my PC's hard drive, the cloud, as well as to data Blu-ray discs. (yes, three different back-up methods because I'm paranoid about losing even just one single photo)

It's not usually a good idea not to reboot. A good rule of thumb is to restart at least once a week. Otherwise bugs begin to crop up as no code is perfect and RAM begins to fill up with stray 'garbage'. I also like to turn off my phone for a night or two every month to give it a break from being on all the time. A bit over the edge and most likely pointless but it makes me feel better ;).

I get the whole uncompressed thing. I own a few expensive headphones (HE-400s, HD25 - II, etc) with my DragonFly USB DAC. But on a smartphone's audio chip and implementation I'm not sure it's worth hogging all that space for them. I usually just download the 320 Kbps Beats Music or Spotify tracks. I've filled about 3/4 of my 64GB card doing this. When it's all the way full I'll purchase a 128GB card.

I get not wanting to trust the cloud too. I do have LTE coverage basically everywhere I go but I'm limited to 3GB. Caps are a huge bummer and a big rant/pet peeve of mine. And even though I coverage most of the time it's nice to know if I go somewhere without coverage I have storage space off the cloud for my phone. I'm the guy with 6TB worth of just Movies/TV rips at full DVD/Blu-ray quality (direct rips using MakeMKV). I'm also the guy who backs up his pictures in 10 different locations in 5 different fashions.

The indexing of the files takes place after the boot. On my phone which has a card, it slows me down because I have to wait for it to finish. But on your phone you have more power so probably it just goes on in the background and you don't notice it. I agree with the poster above that it's a good idea to reboot every week or more frequently than that. It does help clear out any problems that could be accumulating and if you leave it off a bit it can relieve "machine fatigue".

Shhhhhhhhh PORN.

The internet was made for Porn .

porn is for laptops and home PC.... my phone is shared with 3 other people sometimes...(one of them is my boss), so it's stupid to keep porn on it because she'll probably have to fire me.
