what happens when you factory reset?

I have read many posts that tell users to try factory reset to see if that solves a problem. I have been told that factory reset will wipe my phone and use it as a last resort. If i reset my phone, what will I have to redo to get my phone back to where it was prior to the reset? How often does the average phone owner have to factory reset their phone. Is there a tutorial I didn't find that can answer these questions?

Remember when you first got your phone ? That is the original factory state . A FDR takes it back to that state . Everything you've done since is up to you .

If you do a Reset that will leave your apps .
