I just opened my new Galaxy S5 mini, and for some reason it wont let me install a single app. I literally just unboxed the thing and added a 16GB micro SD to it. The phone is on factory settings. I went to Google play and tapped to download the twitter app, and it said the app couldnt install due to insufficient space on the device. It said that for every other app I tried to download.

Im completely new to android, so can someone tell me why 16GB is apparently not enough to hold a single app?

Welcome to Android Central! Is this a brand new, mint-condition unit? Or is it possibly a used or refurbished one? Did you get it from a big, reputable retailer, or an independent seller?

Go to Settings>Storage, and tell us what you see. If you could post a screenshot, that would be even better. http://forums.androidcentral.com/amb...d-central.html

I am having problems posting the screenshots ATM, especially because I cant downloadthe app.

On the storage screen, the first bar that shows up (which i think is for internal storage, is almost completely filled with green. It says that there are around 15MB free there. Then It shows The SD card, which is completely empty. It has like 14.5GB free it says. And I have the radio button chosen on top to set the "default write disk" to the SD card, but it still says the 14.5GB is insufficient space.

Okay, but Ive tried to download a ton of different apps, all of different kinds, and all of them give me the same insufficient space message. I get the concept of some apps not installing to the SD card, but obviously SOME apps have to install to the SD right? And even if every app Ive chosen just happens to be one that only installs to internal storage, I JUST got the phone. So there are some apps you have to install to internal storage, but apparently my phone came so that the OS filled the internal storage all the way to the brim, so installing those apps would never be possible? How does that make any sense? either Im missing some big piece of information or something is wrong here.

Apps can't download and install directly to the SD card, bypassing Internal Storage. They have to download first to Internal Storage, and during the installation process, the app might automatically move part of itself to the SD card (or at least may create some data folders there).

It would still be helpful to see your Settings>Storage screen, so keep trying to post it. You might need a few more posts on this forum before you're allowed to post an image.

There is something very wrong with that phone, since Phone Storage could not possibly be 107 MB in total. I might expect that from some cheap phone from 2010 running Gingerbread, but certainly not an S5 Mini. This is the reason I asked before where you bought the phone--was it a big reputable retailer, or some independent seller? If the latter, I'd be concerned about a fake S5 Mini, or perhaps you got some used unit that was heavily modified (and messed up) beforehand.

Do a factory reset. Something is definitely wrong if you have a new phone and only that much storage available. Go to settings> backup> reset factory data

So I deleted Data son something called Google Play Services. Icon looked like a puzzel piece. I started being able to download stuff again, because that was taking up like 50+MB. So is deleting that going to screw up things for me, or should I be okay?

I don't think the phone is going to be ok. Google Play Services is an important part of delivering all kinds of Google services to the phone, so whatever you cleared from data will likely build up quickly.

50 MB isn't much anyway. There's something wrong with the phone. Where did you get it?

One of my esteemed colleagues looked at your screenshot and thinks your phone is a knockoff clone. The settings menu does not look like a typical TouchWiz menu, and the cell signal indicator looks very crude. There are unfortunately a lot of fakes out there--all they have to do is make a phone with terrible internals and make the outside look like a flagship phone, and people will buy it thinking they got a great deal. Contact the seller and ask for a refund.
