So, this is a Galaxy S5 on Verizon, and was new 10 days ago.
If it happens to you, then its always nice to know you are not alone.

The phone has worked fine until this morning.
The phone was on the desk, screen upward but asleep (I was not actively using the device) when I noticed the red Verizon splash screen come on - it continued to boot then the screen displayed:

Device memory damaged.
-----------------------------------------------
The data partition has been corrupted.
You need to reset your device to factory defaults.
This will erase all of your data"

and a reset button.

Reset button causes the device to say 'bloop', then nothing happens.
Restart - the same.
Shutdown, remove battery, remove SD card. Restart - same.
Do a three button hard reset - same.

Called Verizon - escalated to mid-tier - escalated to Samsung.
Returned to Verizon - replacement phone on its way.
(It sucks that the phone died, but I must say that Verizon customer service were great, and the whole process was over in about 50 minutes.)

Your mileage may vary.

Good luck!
