USB Cable Supplied for Charging S5

My wife just upgraded from an S3 to an S5. Verizon told me that my current S3 chargers (auto and AC) will work fine in the S5. I see that the S5 cable and also the charging port has a "second" connection type. What is that additional connection for and if I only want to charge is it okay to my older charging cables which only have a USB type connection?

The elongated port is for USB 3.0 connection, which gives faster charging. It's still backwards compatible with USB 2.0 cables, though. See the review on CNet for more info: Samsung Galaxy S5 review - CNET
