SMS/MMS defaulted to Hangouts, no way back?

A while back I had set Hangouts to handle my SMS/MMS and recently noticed that there's no way to set the Messages app to handle that function anymore... when I go change the defaults, all it lists is Hangouts! anyone else see this?

unfortunately I've tried that to no avail... this is what I see for defaults
