Is there a way to get rid of this?

If that's a widget on your homescreen, just tap and hold on it and drag it to the trash bin. Also, if you're using a 3rd party launcher, some have a setting to have a persistent search box, so you'd have to disable that setting.

No, it comes down when I swipe down. I thought it was something by default.

Well, now I feel stupid. That was an option in the Next Launcher.
