There's been several folks recommending a factory reset after an OS upgrade. As an editorial comment, that shouldn't be required with a "mandatory" upgrade. But on to my question:

When you do a factory reset, doesn't it revert back to the version of Kit Kat that the phone came with? If so, you still have to upgrade to Lollipop.
So.... what's the difference between the upgrade I just did and a factory reset followed by an upgrade anyway?

When you accept an update, that doesn't get undone with a reset. When you reset, the OS framework is allowed to get rebuilt, system caches are cleared, and that can clear any data conflicts that may exist after accepting any update.

I agree that the factory reset shouldn't be required with a mandatory update. But I think the problem is with certain apps that aren't built correctly. Factory reset allows you to totatly clean your phone from poorly constructed apps. Google/Samsung is not going to test the build with all available apps. That is why it works just fine for some people, but has issues with others.
