Gmail sync problem

I've had this frustrating issue with my Sprint S5 since I got it, and have never been able to solve it... posting here for suggestions.
Currently Android 4.4.4, but had the same issue with previous versions.
I use the native email app and have 4 email accounts set up... gmail, hotmail, mail.com, and a pop3 work account.
I have master sync turned on and my gmail sync is set to automatic(push).
This issue only occurs with my gmail account... the other 3 are working correctly.
Gmail only syncs sporadically... many times I will push manual sync, and I will get emails from a few days ago. Other times, a new email will sync as it's supposed to.
Also, often times I will delete an email only to have it reappear later as a new(unread) email. (This happens with all 4 accounts, not just gmail).
I have searched online for solutions, but none have been successful. Please help!!
