    on my ps3 is says scan for a nearby Bluetooth devices so I made my s5 available for nearby devices to see it. but the ps3 just kept scanning it never found anything. am I doing something wrong?

    The phone is a Bluetooth phone device and a Bluetooth Multimedia device, it's not a Bluetooth PS3 controller device. The PS3 is probably looking for controller devices, so it won't find the phone (unless there's an app that adds a PS3 controller profile to the stack)..
