For the last few days, the screen timeout has turned on in 10 minutes. It has been set to timeout in 10 minutes. Why does the screen turn on by itself? There is no activity, confirmed by the notification panel, to activate the screen. Thanks.

How's your cell signal? I've noticed on my Zenfone 2 that if the signal disappears due to poor reception, the screen comes on (which can lead to ****-dialing or taking pictures of the inside of my pocket).
Do you happen to be charging it at the time? My screen can be off for a while, but once it's fully charged the screen will come on full but then goes back out after the time-out period.
Sounds like it might be any one of a large number of apps that is waking your phone up. These can range from either system, carrier or user apps and cover GPS, messaging, emails, Facebook, sat.nav, etc; etc: You could try installing GSam Battery Monitor, free from the Play Store, to try and track down what is waking your system up .
I think it's a combination of all that you folks have itemized. Sometimes it was triggered by something in the background, and sometimes when it was just charging. Anyway, I feel better after hearing from you folks. I know that it's not the phone going bad. Thanks again.
