I cannot hear call recipients on my Galaxy S5 unless phone is on speaker. Why might that be?

Either making or taking calls on my Galaxy S5 model I cannot hear the other side unless I switch the phone to speaker mode. Have I switched on something or other which is preventing the audio on the phone from working properly.
