Galaxy S5 fingerprint scanner not working even after hard reset

I was trying to use my fingerprint scanner to access an app as I always do, and noticed it wasn't available. So i went into settings, and sure enough it tells me there's an error and I should restart. Needless to say, I tried troubleshooting online, and even did a factory reset and it still doesn't work. Same error message. Am I just screwed? If I root the device and try that workaround would I have a chance of fixing it? Please, I really need some assistance here.

What app? Are you talking about not being able to unlock your phone?

even did a factory reset and it still doesn't work
When you did this, did you have to go through the entire setup like you did when you pulled the phone brand new from the box?

What workaround are you referring to?

A factory reset should have wiped the phone and brought it back to a state where you had to run through the entire setup. If you went through the reset, and the fingerprint scanner still doesn't work, then you most probably have a hardware problem.
