Why such little development for this phone?

As popular as this phone is/was why has there been such little development for custom roms? You can't even find a single one click root app that actually works at least not for the US cellular version.

Does anyone have a suggestion for a phone that's a year or two old with active developers that is a GSM based phone?

Nexus 5; Nexus 6; Nexus 5X; Nexus 6P. Those will have by far the best developer support.

S5 had Knox. That makes it pretty worthless for most purposes that aren't standard use.

Oh, ok - Moto G. Any version is good, the Moto G 4 isn't for sale yet, but the 2015 version is still good.

I think that the answer as to why there is so little custom ROM development for the U.S. Cellular model, G900R4, lies in the fact that unlike, say, the international model, G900F, which is available in half the world on their GSM networks, the G900R4 is a carrier branded minority variant, available in only one country on the old CDMA network that is now only partially used in the USA and China.

Therefore, there is not the wide developer interest in such a minority model. As Assassin Droid states, the Nexus phones for your carrier would be a much better bet in terms of developer support and you should steer clear of U.S. carrier branded minority variants that only support CDMA.
