So, believe it or not, I actually want a message popup on my screen when I get a text. However. I really liked the way it popped up on my s4 (4.4.2) just a small banner that ran through the text and then disappeared. Is there anyway to get that same functionality on my s5? (6.0.1) Short of rooting the phone back to a stock kernal.

I never had the s5 but I've went from s4 to s6 when they launched April of last year. My s6 still has the popup option on the stock messenger so I'd assume the s5 would still have it.

Try opening your stock messaging app, make sure you are not in a conversation thread but in the overview screen. Hit more>settings>notification and there should be an option for pop-up display.
