The deal on the s6 on edge is $24.99 per month. But you have to pay sales tax on the full price which is around $50 (sales tax and other verizon taxes). Now, if you only keep the phone for one year and edge up again, shouldn't they refund half of that tax since you only owned the phone for one year? I know, I know... I'm too picky and that's how they make money, but am I right?
Last year, I edged up to the S5 and paid the sales tax. Now, if I edge up again, shouldn't I get half of the tax back since I'm returning the S5 to Vz?

Sales tax is sales tax. You always pay sales tax over and above the sale price. Death and taxes my friend

Legally they have to collect the sales tax on the full amount regardless of when they get it back. If I remember correctly Verizon, AT&T, etc don't even get any of that. All goes to city, state, federal, etc.

Verizon has nothing to give you back; you'd have to take it up the local and federal government if you want anything back.

I didn't pay anything on my Verizon Edge preorder. Maybe they will tack it onto the next months bill? I don't remember seeing anything about it though.

I just signed up for Edge today and it said that the first bill may be higher due to the added tax. Look at it this way, if you didn't use the Edge program and signed a 2 year contract, you would still have to pay the tax AND a $30 activation fee. This is the price we pay to be phone geeks.

Correct. No activation fee with Edge. My point was if you opted for a contract instead, you would have the tax and an activation fee, so it could be worse.

Exactly. He's saying that this is an additional perk to the Edge plan. Honestly this new Edge plan really is great. It's free financing on a phone. I can pay it off early and then sell it and then get another "free" phone whenever I want. Or I can trade it in after 16 months and upgrade for free (haven't done the math to see if that makes sense, probably not). It just adds a lot more flexibility and I get a flagship for basically the same monthly price as I was paying for before as well as $300 down + taxes and activation.

None here in NH. No state income tax either. They get you in other ways.

There shouldn't be activation fees period, tell me how does it cost 30/35 dollars depending on your carrier to activate a phone?

Yes you did, that's why they ask for a credit card to charge the tax too. Nothing due today, but they did bill you for the tax. So tax on the phone purchase won't be on your first bill.

They do have to pay for all of the CSR's and other support staff who managed the systems. Not saying it isn't a rip off but its how they do pay for the overhead.

I am on the fence about moving back to Verizon, but they have certainly made Edge worse, now you have to clear 75% of the pay off and at that point you might as well just pay it off and sell it, but if you do you lose the ability to Edge up and have to wait 60 days. They get you coming and going. But my AT&T bill is a bit too high for the data I use and Verizon has made the data and the $25 discount on Edge a lower point of entry.
