Each week, I’ll attempt to highlight an app that is new to me, even if it’s not actually new.

    Today Calendar (and Pro)

    Category: Calendar app
    Audience: Everyone

    Description:
Before finding this calendar app, I was on a never ending hunt for something that met all of my calendar needs. There are a few options out there that meet most needs, but this was the first and only that met all needs.

-Split view. I can’t explain how important this is to me, and this is one of the things that sets it apart from other calendars, including Google’s own calendar. I want to see the entire month on the top half of my screen, and I want the plans for the selected day on the bottom half. I don’t want to click on a day, then have to scroll down through all hours of the day to see if I have plans. Note that this calendar also handles other layouts, but split view is required for me.

-Event indicator on the days of month view. I’m still talking about split view here; I like that the top half showing the month puts dots/lines on the days that have events entered. This sets this app apart from others like Sunrise Calendar, which drove me nuts, because you’d have to click each day to see if you had plans, you couldn’t tell just from looking at the month. (Note that Sunrise for iOS had this functionality, but the android version did not, last time I checked).

-Material Design. This app looks great and fits right in with the rest of your phone. The animations are also fantastic, and very smooth. I can’t emphasize how great each and every aspect/section of this app looks, which puts it ahead of many other calendar apps.

-Optional Dark theme. You can always switch to the dark theme if that’s your thing, or even have it set to auto, which changes your theme according to sunrise and sunset.

-Weather implementation. You can get your forecasts right in your calendar. One cool function is that at the top of the navigation bar (which you can slide out from the left), it will tell you how long until it rains, and other weather info.

-Other expected functionality. Rather than listing everything, I’ll just summarize by saying that everything else you’d expect from a calendar app is there. Widgets, notifications, reminder, integration with Google accounts and others, etc.

Note: this is a bizarre thing to mention, since I use a GS6, but the only other calendar that compares to this is the S Planner app on the S6. However, the Samsung calendar app on my Tab S 8.4 is functional, but ugly. I like consistency, and with Today Calendar, I can have the same calendar app on both/all of my android devices.

Price and Value: Free to try, $3.72 CAD for Pro. Considering that this checks all of my boxes for an ideal calendar app for both phone and tablet, this price is a steal.

Permissions: there are a number of permissions, however they all seem to me sense for this functionality, I personally have no worries.
IAPs: No IAPs! Just a one time purchase of the pro version once you fall in love with the free version.

It doesn't even show up in the battery stats, and GSAM had it at 0.0% so I think we're safe, haha.

Question. Where is it backed up? If you change devices, how do you migrate important dates to the new device?

It's all through your google account. It syncs through google, and it's the same info as if you visit Google calendar on a desktop browser.

Well, If there was SD card support in the S6, that's where it could be stored and moved from phone to phone.

It's not a hug deal if there isn't. The stock calendar has the important dates so you don't lose everything but as of a point in time.

Plus we have syncing between phones that help with this, so no need for a SD card in this case.

(just for clarity, I know you were just kidding)

Did you test this by adding an event and then checking the stock calendar?

Yes. It's all synced through your account (whichever account you choose). It's no different than using the S Planner or any other 3rd party calendar app, it's merely the interface.

Thanks for the feedback. It sounds like it's definitely worth a try.
