Phone will not charge after dying. please help

Hi,

I fell asleep last night without putting my phone on charge, and I wake up this morning to a lifeless phone, so I just pop it on charge like anyone else would...

its been 3 hours and the phone is still dead, with the red LED flashing every couple of seconds.
ive tried holding the power button in for a few seconds, ive switched cables/plug
ive tried plugging it in to my laptop too

Has this happened to anyone else?
This is the first time ive let the battery drain

After eventually finding the number and calling my provider, tech support informed me of the "volume down and power button" method, I had no clue haha
