I've turned it off and left it off. The recent apps button did work but it will not work now but the home button and back buttons still work.

Both capacitive buttons stopped working on my second S6, which was a refurbished replacement from Sprint. Less than 24hrs after I got it the buttons stopped lighting up and were no longer functional. A Sprint tech was unable to repair it and ordered another refurbished S6, which I'm currently using and it too is defective.
It's possible you're S6 has the same issue as my first replacment phone. You should go to your local carrier store and have their tech look at it. Hopefully it's an easy fix, but if not you might need a replacement.
By the way, Sprint and Samsung didn't have an explanation as to why the capacitive buttons stopped working. All the Sprint tech could tell me is that they're getting too many defective S6's. In fact his personal phone is an S6 and he's on his fourth one!
