So the S6 and the upcoming Note 5 have metal back's but this seems to have come at the expense of their most useful features - expandable memory and replaceable battery.

My question is why can't Samsung (and also Apple for that matter) design a phone with a metal back which is also removable allowing you to still have the above mentioned features? Surely it has to be possible?

The s6 back is made of glass. A removable battery also has to be a thicker size than a non removable (plastic case for removable vs foil for non removable ) so the thickness of the phone would change.

The GS6 has a glass back, not metal. Like mentioned above, a non removable battery is smaller than a removable battery. As far as the expandable memory, it's has to do with the type of memory the phone is using. Here is a Thread on the technical aspects of it.

As the others said the S6 back is not metal, it's glass.

Also it would be quite easy to make a metal back that is replaceable, that is not the issue. Apple has never wanted to do things that way because they want to make their phone as thin as possible. Putting in the plugs for a removable battery and or SD card requires more space which means a thicker phone.

Apple, and presumably Samsung, can make a battery which is litteraly molded to the inside of the phone making it as large as they can while making it smaller than a replaceable battery could be. They do the same with their laptops.

Personally I guess Samsung wants to control the cost, the budget, just my views, kinda like the Apple, why Apple doesn't use 2GB RAM? Also, if S6's back cover were a removable one, it would add unnecessary trouble. Of course it is also designed for space utility.

Apple doesn't use 2GB of ram because of the way their software works it doesn't need it

Very true. Android allows apps to render in the background after pushing the home button or switching apps whereas iPhones stop everything the app is doing the second you push the home button.

Its a good question. Looking at the LG G4 it has a removable back allowing removable battery of a decent size and expandable storage. But the way the back gets removed is probably the reason its not metal- it has to flex and bend, which could probably be solved with a release clip but that would completely ruin the aesthetic and feel.

The beauty of Android is that they give you tons of options through phones you can purchase based on your personal preference. I enjoy the S6 with internal storage for the simple fact that I don't have a Gazillion folders to look through to find stuff with an SD card inserted. That's just me. Non removable battery doesn't bother me, you can get a charger case and have backup if necessary. I think phones are moving towards being slimmer and more practical for ever day life. As above mentioned, the phone can be made lighter and slimmer by ditching the removable back and SD card. If you like a removable battery and external storage, there are other options for phones that a close runner ups to the S6 or maybe better. I'm not a "phone junky" so I don't know which was is best statistic wise.

There was a Samsung phone running bada OS called Samsung Wave s8500. That was an all metal build with a removable back. A truly well made phone, although not as thin as today's phones.
