my Samsung galaxy s6 was working on Friday morning around 6 AM then 2 hours later could not identify my fingerprint and was asking for a backup password.

This might sound silly, but did you just wash your hands? Washing your hands could have distorted your fingerprint.

    Welcome as a new member.

I can't answer your question, but Samsung themselves may be able to do so.

Enter in your backup password and reset your fingerprint in the settings. Make sure to set it correctly as it shows on the phone.

People have tried that 'solution' - it does NOT work. I've spent hours Googling the Internet, searching on different forums, etc w.r.t. this problem. My conclusion? THERE IS NO WAY TO FIX THIS PROBLEM WITHOUT DOING A FACTORY RESET.

Because consumer biometrics are not there yet. Getting there, but this "feature" on smartphones has yet a ways to go.

Numerous things can cause it, dirt, water, oil on your finger or the scanner.

Delete the fingerprints and add them again. I always adds two sets of two fingers.

I had the same problem with mine. I deleted the fingerprints and added them again. Worked perfectly. Haven't had near the problem since I did so. The fingerprint reader definitely doesn't work every time but it now works more times than it fails.

It's worth a try and sure beats the aggravation of a reset.

I had the same problem with mine. I erased the saved finger prints and added them again. Worked like a charm.

I realise this might contradict my earlier response, but using the Samsung Galaxy S6 4G in Safe Mode for a while (a suggestion I got from Samsung technical support) has actually worked for me. (It's been working for 48 hours now without a single glitch).

I'm not suggesting that the above solution will work for everyone because there are multiple causes behind this fiendish problem. For example, I tried adding my fingerprint from scratch twice and it made no difference, yet taking this step might resolve the problem for some users.

If it is great in safe mode and not out of safe mode, that is an indication you have a third party app causing the problem.

No, sorry I wasn't clear - the fingerprint scanner has been working perfectly for 72 hours now in normal mode.
