Help removing Google Assisatant from home button - short press.

My wife has an S6 that has been hijacked by Google Assistance. We are trying to restore functionality of the home button.

When the home button is short pressed, Google assistant pops up. I have enabled Google assistant and then turned it off, but this does not get rid of the assistant popping up when the home button is pressed. I have uninstalled updates to the Google app but that didn't work either. Currently the phone as the newest Google app update installed again.

She doesn't mind if the Google assistant pops up when the home button is long pressed, but this also happens when the button is short.

We just want the phone to return back to the home screen when the home button is short pressed.

Settings > apps > setting icon > default apps > Assist & voice input > assist app

Then change google to your prefered launcher.

In my case I just wanted the home button to go to the home screen
So I selected the "home launcher"app from playstore.
Then had a home screen widget "Dhome" from playstore to use with the launcher.

Its working now but what a mission for just a simple task!!
