Notification sounds

My colleagues just gleefully told me that whilst my headphones were plugged in (I was trying to sort out notification sounds/ringtones etc) the speaker on my S7 Edge played the sounds. I never had this issue with the S5, how do I disable notification sounds whilst my headphones are plugged in?

Welcome to Android Central! Was the headphone plug pushed in all the way? Make sure there isn't any debris in the jack--use a can of compressed air to blow it out.
