    Device: Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge
Problem: Enter PIN instead of using fingerprint recognition because of security policy
Solution: Clear cache and/or data (I did both) from Fingerprint app.
    Method: Go to Settings» Applications» Application manager» MORE» Show system apps» Fingerprint» Storage» Clear cache and/or data» Reboot» reAdd fingerprint(s) if necessary (wasn't necessary for me)
Comment: After searching for weeks for a solution, ran across this solution for the Galaxy S5, decided to give it a try and voila! I'm one happy camper!

Is anyone else experiencing their s7 edge randomly requiring you to input your secondary lock screen password instead of the designated finger print scanner I've set as my unlock method?

It'll just happen randomly. And too frequently too.

Anyone else experiencing this? Kind of frustrating because I only want to use finger print to unlock.

Anyone know what's going on here? Thanks.
I have this exact problem, and I think it's a bug. It's also unsafe because it happens a lot while I'm driving. I reach down to open the phone with my fingerprint (something I can do without looking at the phone, using only my finger), but the phone wants a pin. I also have this problem with SmartLock enabled. In fact, I enabled SmartLock with the headset I havr on all day, thinking this problem would go away, but it hasn't. I reboot my phone 2 or 3 times a week out of habit, and this problem can happen 3 to 4 times in a day. I hope this gets cleared up in an update soon. It's really the only annoyance I have with what is otherwise the best phone I've ever had.

Do you by any chance use a screen-off method other than pressing the power button?

If found if I used the Nova Launcher action "Screen lock", the next time I tried to unlock my device it would not let me use my fingerprint / iris. I found this workaround: install the app "Screen off via short timeout" from the Play Store (by Dyna logix). If I assign this to the Nova Launcher gesture, the screen turns off (takes a few seconds longer) but I can unlock normally.

I knew this b/c us Nexus users have been experiencing this since sept of last year when Marshmallow came out. 😝
I had it on my Nexus 6P because of Mobile Iron. I uninstalled it and still had the problem. A reboot cleared what settings were left from the uninstall.

If you turn off the screen using a regular Screen Off app, you'll be prompted for the pin. It's an Android Marshmallow security thing.

To have the convenience of using an app to turn off the screen & not get prompted for a pin, you have to use a screen off app like this one:

    this solution is PERFECT!!
    Thanks optimummind..

i have Screen Lock Pro and it works perfect everytime you have to check mark the setting for saying lollipop and mashmellow work around then the only time i have to do password is when i start my cell for the first time because i turn off when sleeping at night otherwise fingerprint works every time

I've had this problem on my Note 7 and S7Edge, but it's only when I use an app to lock the screen.

Basically, if you lock the screen with the power button or when the screen times out, no problem unlocking with the fingerprint. Otherwise, you'll have to enter your PIN or password.

The solution which works for me is a simulation of power button. Try this [root required]: Automate for Android ⋅ Simulate Power Button

this is the exact answer to this problem.if you using apps to turn off your creen the app like power app it makes finger print in second place for opening your device so for solving this problem you need to remove all apps like this and use the standard fingerprint option from device.
    thx

Yes my new S7 Edge is doing that and it's really annoying. I've gone back and reset my security settings to make sure its fingerprint only, and it was okay for a few days, but then it went back to the pass code periodically. I haven't found a fix yet.

Hello Saeed, Thanks for the information but I still have one question, if a different app locks the device (not a power or security app) then the previous app which locked it, will the device require the pin again? Ie it locks while using a word processor then you unlock your phone and use Excel and it locks while in Excel, will that require the pin instead of the fingerprint? Thanks again!

I have found a solution to the problem. Setup a SmartWake application to get permission from the use of prints. Acdisplay work like a charm. The developer is also include that app problem and solved. Galaxy s6 edge+ Nougat
